Who is my guardian angel?

“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and saves them” (Ps 33:8)

The Catechism of the Church says that “the existence of spiritual, non-corporeal beings, angels, is a truth of faith”. The testimony of Scripture in this regard is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition (n.328). No Catholic can, therefore, deny the existence of angels. They are personal and immortal creatures, purely spiritual, endowed with intelligence and will and surpassing in perfection all visible creatures (cf. Cat. n.330). Saint Gregory the Great said that almost every page of the written Revelation speaks of angels.

The Church teaches that, from the beginning until death, human life is surrounded by the protection (Ps 90:10-13) and the intercession of angels. “The angel of the Lord camps around those who fear him and saves them” (Ps 33:8).

Saint Basil the Great (†369), doctor of the Church, said: “Each believer is flanked by an angel as protector and shepherd to lead him to life” (Ad. Eunomium 3,1). That is, we have a personal Guardian Angel. Jesus said: “Do not despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Mt 18:10).

Feast of Guardian Angels

The liturgy of October 2 celebrates the Guardian Angels since the 16th century, a festival made universal by Paul V. Now, if the Church celebrates the feast of the Guardian Angels it is because, in fact, they exist and care for us, protect us , they illuminate and govern our lives, they help us as they helped Tobias. But to do this, you need to believe in them, respect them, and not scare them away by sin. One day, a guy told me: “I don’t watch pornography on the internet, because I’m ashamed of my Guardian Angel!” The best tribute to our angel is to live a sinless life, seeking, with his help, to do God’s will.

Offer the Lord our prayers

Church Tradition believes that our Guardian Angel has the task of offering our prayers to the Lord, supporting us and protecting us from the attacks of the devil, who tries to make us sin and lose eternal life. So, nothing more important than having a life of intimacy with our angel, constantly calling on him and placing ourselves under his protection. Since I was a child, I learned this prayer from my mother: “Holy angel of my guardian, to whom I was entrusted by heavenly piety, enlighten me, guard me, govern me, govern me. Amen. I never stopped praying that prayer.

So, the best thing to do is to do nothing without asking for the light, the protection, the government of the good angel that the Lord placed as guard and custodian of our lives, from baptism until death. This is why many Popes, such as John XXIII, revealed their deep devotion to the Guardian Angel, suggesting, as Benedict XVI also said, that we express our gratitude for the service he provides to each one of us and invoke him every day with O Angelus Dei.

Saint Padre Pio had a deep relationship with the Guardian Angel. There are countless passages in the life of this saint with his angel and with the angels of others. He once told someone: “We will pray for your mother, that your guardian angel will keep you company.” Call on your Guardian Angel, as he will enlighten you and guide you on the path of God.

What is the name of my Guardian Angel?

Some ask if it is possible to know the name of our Guardian Angel. The Church does not talk about this, it only knows the names of the three great Archangels: Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. Therefore, if someone knows the name of their angel it is a private revelation that is not confirmed by the Church.

The most important thing is to have a living and fervent relationship with our good protective angel throughout our lives.
