THE NAMES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THEIR MEANING

(Priests Gonzalo and Andrea Sanabria)

The Scriptures present us with a wide variety of designations in reference to the Holy Spirit, many of which are vitally important to the understanding of His nature and the development of His work.

The titles and symbols of the Holy Spirit reveal to us his essence and nature (Titles = his person, his being, and symbols = his work, his doing). Let’s read this interesting study

1. The Holy Spirit: Luke 11:13.
“Then if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

This name emphasizes the moral character of the Spirit. He is the author of Holiness. To Him has been entrusted the work of executing divine holiness in all of creation and in the human being. This title, Holy Spirit, puts the emphasis, not on the person, but on the power, manifestation, and operation of the Spirit.
two. The Spirit of God: Eph. 4:30.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

This title emphasizes the divine origin, divine character, and divine power of the Spirit. The Spirit is specifically related to the Father, since it proceeds from Him.

3. The Spirit of Christ: Rom. 8:9.
The Holy Spirit is very especially related to the Lord Jesus Christ. He imparts the life of Christ (Romans 8.2), He produces the fruit of Christ (Philippians 1.11), He reveals the things of Christ (John 16.16), He imparts the power of Christ (Acts 1.8 and John 14.12) and He takes the place of ascended Christ (John 14.16-18).
The Spirit ministers to make Christ present in the Church, and to form Christ in the believer as real as He formed the body of the human Jesus before His birth here on earth.
Four. The Comforter: Jn. 2:26 p.m.

“Comforter” comes from the word “paracletos” in the original Greek language and means: “One called to the side of another for the purpose of helping him.” The Holy Spirit as Paraclete is the One who is ready to provide: courage, strength, wisdom, and grace for every need. The Spirit is given so that He may be to believers here on earth what Christ would be if He were personally present.

5. The Spirit of Grace: Heb. 10:29.
Even though Christ is the origin and source of Grace, the Holy Spirit makes real in the lives of believers the vital provisions of the gift of grace.
6. The Spirit of Truth: Jn. 4:13 p.m.
It was Jesus who gave this title to the Holy Spirit. He used it three times. It can be said that the Holy Spirit fully manifested his word as the spirit of truth by inspiring the writers of the Holy Book.

It was there that he bore witness of the Father and the Son in all truth. Error and deception are in open contradiction to the nature of the Holy Spirit.

7. The Spirit of Life: Rom. 8:2.
The Spirit quickens the man dead in crimes and sins, and imparts new life.
8. The Holy Spirit of Promise: Eph. 1:13.
Because the receipt of his power and grace is one of the outstanding blessings promised in the Old Testament. Ezekiel 36.27; Joel 2.28.
9. The Spirit of Adoption: Rom. 8:15.
When a person is saved, he is not only given the name of the son of God, and is adopted into the family of Godbut also receives within his being lconscientiously that he is a partaker of the divine nature.

Final reflection: The Holy Spirit has not only been sent to be in us, but to be with us, this implies communion, friendship, mutual knowledge, it is God’s desire that we have communion with His Spirit. God help us to strengthen and grow in communion with your Spirit.
