Faith (Heb. ’emeth,’emûn and ’emûnâh; Gr. pístis). 1. Confidence of heart and mind in God and his ways that lead us to act in harmony with his sovereign will (2Co 5: 7; Heb 11: 8). This faith is not based on a blind and irrational acceptance, but on a supreme confidence in the ability and integrity of God (Deu 7:9; 1Ki 8:56; 1Co 1:9; Heb 10:23; 2 Tit 1: 12; etc.). Such faith is a prerequisite for drawing near to God (Heb 11:6) and through it a person is justified in Christ (Rom 3:28; 5:1; Gal. 2:16; 3:8,25; etc.). ; Christ’s righteousness becomes ours by faith in him (Phi 3:9). The believer’s faith in God enables the Lord to do miraculous things on his behalf and through him (Mat 9:21, 22; Jam 5:14, 15; etc.). True faith cannot be passive, but is manifested in works of righteousness (Gal. 5:6; Jam 2:17, 18, 20, 21, 26; etc.). Paul emphatically denies that faith abolished the law (Rom 3:31) or our obligations to it (6:1); rather, he has put us in the situation where, through Christ, the righteousness of the law can be fulfilled in us (8:1-4). 2. What is believed; the system of Christian doctrines. Because of the power and conviction that accompanied the apostles’ preaching of the gospel, “many of the priests obeyed the faith” (Acts 6:7). The magician Elymas sought to prejudice Sergius Paulus, the proconsul of Cyprus, against “the faith” (13:6-8). Paul exhorted his converts to “continue in the faith” (14:22). See also Phil 1:27; Ham 2:1; Jud_3 3. Fidelity, loyalty. This is the specific meaning of the Heb. ’emûnâh, translated as “faith” in Hab 2:4 When Paul quotes this verse (Rom 1:7) he may be giving faith the most comprehensive meaning in the NT. However, in Rom 3:3, Tit. 2:10 and Gal. 5:22, pístis has the meaning of “faithfulness” (and no doubt in other texts as well, to a greater or lesser degree).

Latin fides. Acceptance of some truth. Security derived from the support of someone. Theological virtue consisting of firm adherence to Jesus Christ and his Gospel. It is a free gift of God, Eph 2, 8; to justify us and to save us, Rom 1, 16-17. Without faith it is impossible to please God, Heb 11, 6.

(Heb., †™emun; Gr., pistis). Faith has a double meaning in the Bible:
( 1 ) Trust, dependence (Rom 3:3) and
(2) fidelity, honesty.

In the OT the verb to believe occurs only 30 times, but this comparative infrequency is not an apt reflection of the importance of the place that faith occupied in the OT scheme. The NT takes all of its examples of faith from the lives of believers from the OT (eg, Rom 4:18ff; Heb 11; Jam 2:14ff) and Paul supports his doctrine of faith in the word from Hab 2:4.

When used with a religious application in the OT sometimes faith appears in a specific word, or work of God (Lam 4:12; Hab 1:5), or in the fact of God’s revelation (Exo 4: 5; Job 9:16), or in the words or commandments of God in general (Psa 119:66), or in God Himself (Gen 15:6). There is faith in the word of God’s prophets because they speak for him and he is completely trustworthy (Exo 19:9; 2Ch 20:20). The NT writers, especially Paul and the author of the Hebrews, show that the faith manifested by the OT saints was not different in type from that expected of Christians.

The terms faith and believe occur nearly 500 times in the NT. A main reason for this is that the NT asserts that the promised Messiah had finally come and to the confusion of many the manner of fulfillment obviously did not correspond to the messianic promise. It took a true leap of faith to believe that Jesus of Nazareth was the promised Messiah. It wasn’t long before believing meant becoming a Christian. In the NT therefore, faith becomes the supreme act and experience of the human being.

It is in Paul’s epistles that the meaning of faith is expressed most clearly and in detail. Faith is trust in the person of Jesus, the truth of his teaching, and the redemptive work he accomplished at Calvary. Faith should not be confused with a mere intellectual acceptance of the doctrinal teachings of Christianity, although it is obviously necessary. It includes a radical and total dedication to Christ as the Lord of life.

Unbelief, or lack of faith in the Christian gospel, appears throughout the NT as the ultimate evil. Not giving a decisive response to God’s offer in Christ means that the person remains in sin and is lost…
