Parable of the Straw and the Beam: Context, Analysis and Teaching

The Parable of the Straw and the Beam It is a teaching given by Jesus, being an example of the care that people have to have before pointing out or judging another, since with this little story illustrates that all human beings have mistakesTherefore, raising your hand to criticize is not the right thing to do.

This story seeks to show that the The only one capable of judging anyone is God.since it is pure, holy, clean, and it will do so with a just judgment in comparison to a person, who many times can have the same number of errors or perhaps their imperfections may be greater than the one they are pointing to.

Parable of the Straw and the Beam

Jesus seeing how the Pharisees moved among the people showing themselves perfect in front of the others, He wanted to teach everyone that none was perfectand that before judging or pointing out the other they should review themselves, because that way they would find the same faults or greater things, which could embarrass them by believing themselves better than someone who has failed.

And this comment that Jesus makes to all his teeth said the following:

“Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and don’t see the beam in yours? How can you say to your brother: “Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye”, you who don’t see the plank you have in yours? You hypocrite, first remove the beam from your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (Luke 6:41-42).

Jesus, as always wise and understood in the times, through these words gives a teaching for all those who heard it at the time, but that without a doubt still resonates today in every heart of the people who can read this teaching, who search practice respect and tolerance towards others.

Jesus knowing the weaknesses that a person can have, and even more in the relationships that develop, since one of his mandates is to love his neighbor as himself.

However, that is something that is difficult for human beings because they see the other not so much for their virtues, but for those things that are missing or not correctthat is why Jesus teaches that before looking at the other, you have to review yourself.

It is notorious that the human being has an inclination to criticize the other, to point it out, to play and see its defects with malice, and even mockery. That is why this teaching shows that both the pointer and the pointer have errors, and none is better or greater than the otherand that is why he asks for respect from each other.

Jesus exposes everyone’s defects, he even shows that the person he points to has serious flawsbecause he points out another without measures and becomes a judge, and mercilessly condemns the person, seeking in any way to justify his attitude that rises against the person who is being judged.

Analysis of the Parable of the Straw and the Beam

In this teaching that Jesus gave, he takes two interesting elements that contextualize the environment in which it was enunciated, and it was the straw and the beam, since each of them has a special symbology for the Jewish context in which it was narrated.

The chaff that comes from the Greek word “Acuron” and it is the stem of the cereal plant that is removed from the spike, through the threshing procedure, and that is broken in the process of gathering the sowing, this means that it is a small and dry straw without essence, which from the Greek comes from karfos what is dry

For this reason, the word Beam comes from the Greek of the Dokosand is related to the root dekwhich comes from the word decomai, which is to receive, being known as the beams that are received by the ends of the walls or the pieces of wood, that is, a kind of large base.

In this sense, Jesus points out the difference of each of these elements, in the first step is to contrast the straw that the brother has, that is, that dry or damaged branch; but it also says that you must remove the beam from your own eye, this means the vice or those faults that are in front of the person you are judging.

Jesus emphasizes that it is not taking the speck out of the brother’s eye, but that before that he must remove the beam from the eye of the one who is pointing at youor, that is to say, you are no longer helping the other in their mistakes, but before that you must remove those bad habits or those errors that separate you from being an example for the other.

The beam in this case represents what hinders the spiritual vision of a person, which prevents him from helping his brother, since he will not be able to direct him. It is therefore important to know the writing of God and move according to the precepts established in it, being a maker of it.

“For if anyone is a hearer of the word but not a doer of it, he is like a man who considers his natural face in a mirror. Because he considers himself, and leaves, and then forgets what he was like. But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, that of freedom, and perseveres in it, not being a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, he will be blessed in what he does ”(James 1: 23-25)

Thus, by becoming doers of the word will allow us to see each fault and recognize it before Godso it will allow you to completely remove that beam from your eyes, and see clearly the circumstances that the other is experiencing and will not judge you, but will lift you up in mercy and love, as God wants you to see each other. others

Eye Beam Must Be Removed

This Bible passage that talks about the straw and the beam can be related to the verses that talk about not to judge so as not to be judged, but this means that it is not strictly in that sense, but that Jesus speaks of removing the beam from his eye, that means purifying himself, and purifying himself to be able to judge with fair judgment in the light of the word of God

“For with the judgment with which you judge, you will be judged, and with the measure with which you measure, it will be measured back to you” (Matthew 7:2).

God wants people to be able to help those who are suffering from some kind of need, a difficult circumstance or who need be corrected so that their lives They can be directed by the Heavenly Father, since many times a person can be used as a channel to bless that person who is in bad steps.

That is why Jesus speaks of removing the plank from the eyes, it is remove the ignorance of the Wordclean your spiritual eyes and be able to see beyond, without judging, achieving discernment of what is good and bad, being able to be an instrument of blessing for the person who is doing something inappropriate, and being able to judge correctly.

“Do not judge according to appearances, but judge with righteous judgment” (John 7:24)

You have to remove the straw

After a person cleanses himself, purifies himself and removes the wood from his eye and can clearly see all things according to what is written in the Holy Scriptures, he will be able to act to help that person who has an obvious weakness.

And after that is that a person will be able to see clearly, and will help the brother in that situation that he is living

“then he will be able to see clearly to remove the speck from his brother’s eye” (Luke 6:42)

In this sense, faults that are small in people should not be justified, but that are so the straw as the beam must be removed from people, since that damages the spiritual life and communion that both people can have.

All people make a mistake, that is why you cannot offend or destroy people who may have some small weaknessit is important that after removing that beam that does not allow him to see in a merciful way, he can remove that straw that he has, that is, help him overcome that weakness.

To conclude, we invite you to become aware before issuing a comment on something, it is to see this teaching that Jesus has put into action, to read the Holy Scriptures and When you see someone doing the wrong thing, check first so you can help them.and not be a judge who condemns but be a restorer as Jesus did here on earth.
