ITAMAR – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Itamar (Heb. ‘íŽthâmâr, perhaps “palm island”). The youngest of the 4 sons of Aaron (Exo 6:23; 1Ch 6:3; 24:1). He was consecrated to the priesthood along with his father and his 3 brothers (Exo 28: 1; 1Ch 24: 2). He was given the responsibility of keeping records of the building materials gathered for the building of the tabernacle and its equipment (Exo 38:21), and appointed overseer of the Gershonite and Merarite Levites (Num 4:21-33). Although the office of high priest generally passed to the descendants of Eleazar, it was held for a few generations by those of Ithamar; that is, 594 from Eli to Abiathar, from the days of Samuel to Solomon. Eight of the 24 groups into which David organized the priests belonged to the line of Itamar (1Ch 24:4-18). His descendants are mentioned among the post-exilic priests (Ezr 8:2).

(Oasis of palm trees). The youngest of the children of Aaron and Elizabeth (Exo 6:23). He was consecrated together with his brothers †¢ Nadab, †¢ Abihu and †¢ Eleazar (Exo 28:1). Moses commissioned him to direct the Levites in the inventory of the objects of the †¢tabernacle (Exo 38:21). When his brothers Nadab and Abihu died for presenting “strange fire” before Jehovah, I. did not eat of an offering made later, evidently because of his sadness, which Aaron explained to Moses (Lev 10:16). I. supervised the Levites of the Gershon and Merari line (Num 4:28, Num 4:33). It is generally thought that †¢Eli was a descendant of I. (1Sa 14:3; 1Ch 24:3). A priest from the line of I., named Daniel, returned from exile at the time of Ezra (Ezra 8:2).

(possibly: Father of the Palm Tree).
Aaron’s fourth son mentioned by name. (Ex 6:23; Nu 26:60; 1Ch 6:3) After overseeing the inventory of the tabernacle materials, Ithamar was appointed priest along with his father and brothers in the ceremony detailed in Exodus 29. ( Ex 28:1; 38:21; 40:12-15) Later, when his two older brothers, Nadab and Abihu, were executed for offering “illegitimate fire,” Ithamar and his third brother, Eleazar, were He said not to mourn for them. Over time, Ithamar and Eleazar received even more priestly duties as Jehovah directed them. (Le 10:1-20) Ithamar was given the responsibility of overseeing the various tabernacle services performed by the Gershonites and Merarites. (Nu 3:2-4; 4:28, 33; 7:8)
Ithamar’s descendants continued to serve as priests, and during the reigns of Saul, David, and Solomon, the house of Ithamar’s descendant Eli temporarily served as high priest. When David organized the temple service, eight of the twenty-four priestly divisions were from the house of Ithamar. (1Ch 24:1-6; 1Sa 14:3; 22:9; see HIGH PRIEST.) (heb. ˒ı̂ṯāmār). The meaning of this name is uncertain, but it is possibly “land of palm trees”. The youngest of the four children of Aaron and Elizabet (Ex. 6.23) was called Itamar and was ordained for the priesthood (Ex. 28.1); he directed the construction of the tabernacle (Ex. 38.21). He remained faithful during the apostasy of Nadab and Abihu, except as regards the atonement (Lev. 10). He was placed at the head of the Gershonites and Merarites (Num. 4.28, 33). For evidence that Eli was a descendant of Ithamar see 1 Sam. 14.3; 22.9; 1 Chron. 24.3. Among the exiles who returned, one of his descendants is mentioned, a man named Daniel (Ezra 8.2).
