UZIEL – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Uziel (Heb. Uzzîzêl, “God is my strength” or “God’s strength”; as Azilu). 1. Common ancestor of the Uzielites,* a subdivision of the Kohathite Levites (Exo 6:18, 22; Num. 3:19, 30). He was Aaron’s uncle (Lev 10:4). Aminadab and 112 members of the clan were organized by David to transport the ark to Jerusalem (1Ch 15:10). 2. Leader of a group of Simeonite warriors who launched an attack against what was left of the Amalekites during the reign of Hezekiah (1Ch 4:41-43). 3. Son of Bela and head of a Benjamite family (1Ch 7:7). 4. One of the leading musicians in David’s day (1Ch 25:4); perhaps the so-called Azareel in v 18. See Azareel 2. 5. A Levite committed to the reform work being carried out by King Hezekiah (2Ch 29:14). 6. Silversmith who helped Nehemiah repair the destroyed wall of Jerusalem (Neh 3:8).

1. The fourth and last in the list of the sons of Qohat; he was the grandson of Levi and the uncle of Moses and Aaron. Uzziel’s three sons—Mishael, El(i)zaphan, and Sithri—were heads of Levite families. (Ex 6:16, 18, 20, 22; Le 10:4; Nu 3:19, 30; 1Ch 6:2, 18; 23:12; see Uzzielites.)

2. Head of the family of the tribe of Benjamin and son or descendant of Bela. (1Ch 7:6, 7)

3. Levite musician of the family of Heman, who was entrusted with the musical service of the eleventh division of David; he is also called Azarel. (1Ch 25:4, 18)

4. A Levite descendant of Jeduthun who helped remove unclean objects found in the temple at the beginning of Hezekiah’s reign. (2Ch 29:12, 14, 16)

5. One of the four Simeonite sons of Isi who led a group of 500 men to Mount Seir in order to overthrow and drive out an Amalekite remnant and settle there; he was a contemporary of Hezekiah. (1Ch 4:41-43.)

6. Goldsmith who helped repair the walls of Jerusalem under the direction of Nehemiah; he was the son of Harhaya. (Ne 3:8)
