Domingo de Guzmán, born to a wealthy family in the municipality of Caleruega (Province of Burgos, Spain). His parents were Félix de Guzmán and Juana de Aza, who were known and revered as saints. He was the youngest of three children born of this marriage.

For seven years he studied with his maternal uncle Gonzalo de Aza, who guided him in the holy doctrine and the great religious foundations. When he turned 14, he went to study Humanitarian and Liberal Arts until, later, he decided to study Theology for 4 years.

Santo Domingo was a man very devoted to his people; therefore, as a sign of total humility and love for his neighbor, he sold all his books, in the region of Palencia (where he finished his studies) to raise funds and give them to the poor and needy. He refused to own everything the world considered to be of material value to give to the needy.

I always thought of a world where poverty did not exist and everyone had a total connection with God and his saints. For that reason he always maintained a humble and good-hearted attitude towards his neighbors; what’s more, I always preached to them and he taught the healthy doctrine of Jesus Christ so that, in case of being on deathbed, they can go with God to his heavenly abode.

He was a man of integrity who loved his town and where he belonged. He made vows of chastity and poverty like any good friar, earning the respect and admiration of everyone in the Cathedral of Osma a; Such was the admiration that he was Canon of said cathedral.

He earned everyone’s trust by his prudence and wisdom; for that reason he was taken to Langüedoc (in the south of France) by order of Alfonso VIII king of Castile during the year 1205 approximately, in the company of Diego de Osma (bishop); fulfilling the task of emissary and ambassador to end the wedding of Prince Ferdinand (at the Danish court).

After finishing said task, and seeing the evil and confusion that people suffered because of the bad doctrines; because they were heretics and had bad attitudes, stayed a while preaching in Languedoc, in order to free these souls from the clutches of the devourer who had consumed their thoughts.

However, despite having been canonically elected to be Bishop of various Cathedrals such as Conserans, Beziers and Comminges, all large cities and counties in France; he flatly refused and declined the offers they were giving him, even canonically.

The Order of Preachers and death

What Saint Dominic de Guzmán wanted most was to preach the sound doctrine in all places, bringing hope to everyone who needed it. Therefore, in the year 1215, in a city in Spain called Tolosa, he founded the first house of the Order of Preachers and parishioners.

He worked for a full year to have his existence legalized before the Lateran Council in Rome. Finally, December 22 the following year (1216), Pope Honorius III delivered a sealed document (called a bull) approving the Order of Friars Preachers.

Domingo de Guzmán dies at the age of 51 on August 6, 1221 in Bologna. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX, who was a great friend and admirer of his work, in the year 1234.
