Christian sermons: “THE WORD OF GOD IS OUR FOOD.”
and all the people gathered as one man in the square that is before the Water Gate, and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had given to Israel” Nehemiah 8:1.
Ezra was a priest and scribe learned in the law of the Lord. Called by some: the second Moses. Tradition in the Jewish people teaches us that he knew the law of Moses by heart, Ezra held the position of high priest (because he was a descendant of the priest Aaron), and had civil and religious authority by order of King Artaxerxes. Esdras means “God is help”, a name with which God was expressing his help to Israel in the midst of the difficult times that he was living.
The Lord supported Ezra in a supernatural and powerful way, because when we respond to the call of the Lord, we will always have his help and support.
Today’s verse tells us that Israel was gathered in theAt the gate of the Waters to read and study the Word of God, then this place represents the provision of God through His word. The Word of the Lord is our food, Jesus said: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

We must remember that each of the gates in the walls of Jerusalem (twelve in all) had a name, for example: “the gate of the sheep, the gate of the fish, the gate of the horses” and each of them with their own names. features.

It is also very interesting to remember that the new Jerusalem, the heavenly city, will have twelve gates, just like the gates in the walls of the earthly city (the number twelve in the Bible symbolizes the government of God). We speak then of a city or region where God rules.

Some teach that the Gate of the Waters was close to a spring called Gihon, and that the waters entered the temple through there. It is very interesting to see that Jesus related the work of the Holy Spirit to rivers of living water, he said:

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from within him. This he said of the Holy Spirit, which they that believe in him should receive” (John 7:38-39). Then the waters remind us of the life-giving, renewing and cleansing work that the Holy Spirit does.

The Scriptures also relate the power of the Word of the Lord with the life that water gives, for example in Psalm one. So the Bible tells us about a moment where God poured renewal and life on his people Israel, when they read his law next to the Water Gate.

It is very important to note that it was through reading and studying the Word of the Lord that Israel worshiped and humbled themselves before God. How wonderful and powerful is the work of the Holy Spirit through his word.
Prayer: Help us God to love your word, to scrutinize it with passion and diligence, and give us the ability to allow the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts.
