(God’s people).

1. Son of Gemali, of the tribe of Dan. He was one of the twelve spies Moses sent into the land of Canaan (Nu 13:12) and was among the ten who made a bad report about the Promised Land. He died by Jehovah’s scourge decreed against them. (Nu 14:36, 37.)

2. Father of Makir, from Lo-debar, a town E. of the Jordan. It was in the house of Makir that Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, was staying when David sought him out in order to show him his loving-kindness. (2Sa 9:4, 5, 7; 17:27)

3. Father of Bath-sheba, the wife of Uriah, whom David later took to himself. (1Ch 3:5) At 2 Samuel 11:3 he is called Eliam, a name simply formed by transposing the components of the name Amiel and meaning “God of the People.” It is likely that he was the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s adviser who later betrayed him. (2Sa 23:34; 15:31.)

4. Levite; sixth son of Obed-edom. In addition to being a gatekeeper, he was also one of the storekeepers of the house of Jehovah in the time of David. (1Ch 26:4, 5, 12-15.)
