AZARIAS – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Azariah (Heb. and Aram. ‘A5ary>h , “Yahweh has helped”; occurs in several early Heb. inscriptions). 1. Son of the high priest Zadok in Solomon’s time (1Ki 4:2). 2. Son of Nathan and chief of Solomon’s governors; possibly nephew of the king (1Ki 4:5, 7; see 2Sa 5:14) or, according to other scholars, son of the prophet Nathan. 3. Tenth king of Judah, who took the name Uzziah upon ascending the throne after his father Amaziah’s death (2Ki 14:21, 22; 15:1, 2; cf 2Ch 26:1-3). See Uzziah 1. 4. Descendant of Judah, of the family of Zera (1Ch 2:8). 5. Descendant of Judah from the family of Hezron (1Ch 2:38, 39). Since he was Obed’s grandson, some identify him with Azariah 15. 6. Zadok’s grandson (1Ch 6:9). 7. High priest, son of Johanan (1Ch 6:10, 11). He was probably the officiating priest who with 80 others resisted Uzziah when the king wanted to enter the temple to offer incense in the holy place (2Ch 26:17-20). Some believe that he is identical to the high priest of the same name from the time of Hezekiah (see Azariah 19). 8. Son of Hilkiah and father of Seraiah. A high priest who would have lived shortly before the exile (1Ch 6:13, 14); perhaps Azariah 10. 9. Levite of the family of Kohath, ancestor of the prophet Samuel and the singer Heman (1Ch 6:36). Possibly also the ancestor of Joel, a Levite from the time of Hezekiah (2Ch 29:12). See Azariah 17. 10. Son or descendant of Hilkiah; a priest who held office possibly after the exile (1Ch 9:11), although he may have lived before the exile and been Azariah 8. 11. Son of Obed; a prophet who advised King Asa of Judah to carry out religious reform (2Ch 15:1-8). 12 and 13. Two sons of King Jehoshaphat of Judah (2Ch 21:2). The assignment of the same name to 2 sons of Jehoshaphat can be explained if we assume that they had different mothers, and therefore were stepbrothers. In Hebrew there is only a slight difference in the spelling of the 2 names: the 1st is spelled ‘Azary>h, and the 2nd ‘Azary>hf. 14. Son of Jeroham; an army officer who helped overthrow Athaliah and put Joash on the throne of Judah (2Ch 23:1-21). 15. Son of Obed; another army officer who helped overthrow Athaliah (2Ch 23:1); possibly Azariah 5. 16. Son of Johanan; a prince of Ephraim who with others persuaded the soldiers of Pekah’s army to release the prisoners taken in Judah (2Ch 28:12). 17. A Levite of the family of Kohath, Father or ancestor of Joel (2Ch 29:12); perhaps Azariah 9. 18. Son of Jehalelel, of the family of Merari; a Levite He helped cleanse the temple in Hezekiah’s time (2Ch 29:12). 19. High priest of the time of King Hezekiah (2Ch 31:10, 13); perhaps Azariah 7. 20. Son of Maaseiah; homeowner in Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s day, who repaired a section of the wall in his neighborhood (Neh 3:23, 24); perhaps Azariah 23 and/or Azariah 24. 21. Jewish leader who returned with Zerubbabel from Babylon (Neh 7:7), probably the Seraiah of Ezr 2:2 See Seraiah 6. 22. Levite who helped Ezra explain the Law of God (Neh 8:7); probably Azariah 23. 23. Priest who signed the covenant at the time of Nehemiah (Neh 10:2); perhaps Azariah 20, 22, or 24. 24. Prominent leader in Nehemiah’s day who marched in the dedication procession of the Jerusalem wall (Neh 12:33); possibly Azariah 20. 25. Son of Hoshaiah; he opposed the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 43:2-6). 26. Companion of Daniel (Dan 1:7). The Babylonian name of him was Abed-nego * Some versions of the Bible incorporate into their text an apocryphal prayer, called “Prayer of Azariah”, between vs 23 and 24 of Dan_3 (before the apocryphal “Canticle of the three young men” ).

(The Lord has helped). Name of people from the OT.

1. Priest, son of Zadok. He was a high official in Solomon’s court (1Ki 4:2).

. Overseer of Solomon’s governors (1 Kings 4:5).

. King of Judah (785-734 BC), also known as “Uzziah”. He ascended the throne after the murder of his father † ¢ Amaziah (2 Kings 14: 18-21). “When he began to reign he was sixteen years old, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem” (2Ki 15:2). Although the high places were not removed, A. was a good king. He had many victories: † œhe built Eloth, and restored it to Judah † (2Ch 26:2); “broke the wall of Gath, and the wall of Jabnia, and the wall of Ashdod” (2Ch 26:6); “God gave him help against … the Arabs … and against the Ammonites” (2Ch 26:7-8). In addition to his military victories, his constructions made him famous: † œHe built cities in Ashdod † (2Ch 26:6); “towers in Jerusalem…and fortified them” (2Ch 26:9); “towers in the wilderness, and opened many cisterns” (2Ch 26:10). “He was a friend of agriculture” (2Ch 26:10).

He reorganized the army and armed it properly (1Ch 26:11-14), including “machines invented by engineers” for war (2Ch 26:15). After much prosperity, “his heart was lifted up to his ruin” and he tried to exercise the priestly office, for which God struck him with leprosy, forcing him to spend the rest of his life in a separate house, where he died ( 2Ch 26:16-23).
Os says that he began to prophesy “in the days of Uzziah … two years before the earthquake” (Amos 1:1). Zechariah also speaks of the “earthquake in the days of Uzziah” (Zech 14:5). Extra-biblical sources confirm leprosy, as well as an earthquake in the time of A. Josephus offers some details when narrating that A. put on priestly garments and entered the †¢temple to offer incense despite the opposition of the priests. But that when he was in front of the altar of incense the earth shook and the temple was opened. Through the opening a ray of light fell on the king’s face, who was instantly leprous. It was “in the year that King Uzziah died” that Isaiah had his vision of “the Lord sitting on a throne high and exalted” (Isa 6:1).

. When Hezekiah re-established the “temple” cult, “Joel son of A. … and A. son of Jehalelel” were among the Levites who “sanctified themselves … to cleanse the house of the Lord” (2Ch 29:12, 2Ch 29 :fifteen).

. High priest in the time of the king † ¢ Hezekiah, who testified that after the religious reforms † œJehovah has blessed his people; and this abundance of provisions has remained† (2Ch 31:8-10).

. Character who participated in the work with Nehemiah, († œrestored A. son of Maasías, son of Ananias, near his house †). It is probably the same A. who returned with †¢Zerubbabel (Neh 7:7).
