Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)

Paul went through abuse, injustice, economic difficulties, prison and many other complex situations (see 2 Corinthians 11:23-33). In this biblical passage from Philippians 4 he talks about economic hardship. Paul faced the problems of life with Christ and with the strength that he gave him. What a precious testimony!

He put it this way: “I know what it is to live in poverty, and what it is to live in abundance. I have learned to live in each and every one of the circumstances, both to be satiated and to go hungry, to have plenty and to suffer scarcity. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:12-13).

Psalm 23:1

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. (Psalm 23:1)

The opening sentence of this famous Psalm is one of trust. It tells us about the loving care of God as our shepherd. Since God is our shepherd, we know that all our needs will be met.

Just as a shepherd takes care of caring for and providing what is necessary for each sheep of his flock, God cares for and provides what his children need. That must be our confidence!

Psalm 27:1a

In the midst of struggles and uncertainties, we do not allow fear to overcome us because we know that the Lord accompanies us and strengthens us. In God our soul is safe for all eternity.

Psalm 56:3

When I feel afraid, I put my trust in you. (Psalm 56:3)

David, the same David who had faced the giant Goliath when he was still a teenager, was afraid because there were people who were chasing him. He wasn’t ashamed to acknowledge the feeling of fear in him. What did he do? He brought him before God and chose to trust his heavenly Father to help him.

What do we do with our fears? Do we recognize them and bring them before God? We can learn to deal with our moments of fear in healthy ways by following David’s example. Putting our trust in God!

Reflection on trust in God

John 6:48

I am the bread of life. (John 6:48)

At the beginning of John chapter 6, Jesus fed 5,000 people. The subject of food was on everyone’s mind and many followed Jesus in the hope that he would return to give them something to eat. Others remembered how God had given manna to the people of Israel as they wandered in the desert. Once again, they thought of physical food.

But Jesus surprised them by saying «I am the bread of life». The bread they needed was spiritual food. No matter how full their stomachs were, if they did not satiate their spiritual hunger, they would never feel satisfied. Y Jesus is the only one who can satisfy the hunger or spiritual emptiness in the heart of every human being..

Jesus took advantage of that moment to clarify what he was offering them (eternal life) and the way in which he would achieve it: giving his life (his flesh) for all of them: “Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, and yet they died. But this is the bread that comes down from heaven; he who eats of it does not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my meat, which I will give for the world to live» (John 6:49-51).

Numbers 6:24

The Lord bless you and keep you. (Numbers 6:24)

With those words begins the priestly blessing dictated by God for the people of Israel. Aaron and his sons were to impart that blessing on the people. God wanted to bless his people and that is still his wish. Let us invoke his presence each day. Let us ask for his blessing and his protection on us, on our families, on our country and on all humanity. God wants to do it!

John 10:11

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. (John 10:11)

Jesus is the good shepherd who seeks the welfare of his sheep. In the previous verses Jesus assures that he was not like the shepherds who had come before. They did not genuinely care about the care of their sheep. Rather, they sought their own well-being: they stole and caused damage.

Jesus said to all who were there: “I am the door; whoever enters through this door, which is I, will be saved” (John 10:9). He made it clear that he came to save and to give life abundantly (John 10:10). Being the good shepherd, he fulfilled what he said: he gave his own life, died on the cross, for love of his sheep.

Psalm 90:1

Lord, you have been our refuge generation after generation. (Psalm 90:1)

Moses, author of this psalm, knew what it was like to wander in the desert in search of refuge. He led the people of Israel from Egypt on the way to the Promised Land. Although there were many places where they took refuge during that time, they found their true refuge in the eternal God, creator of heaven and earth.

God took care of them, helped them and guided them to the place that he had designated for them. God also cares for us and helps us. He took care of the previous generations and will continue to help and guide the generations that will come after us. He is the protective God, the safe haven and he takes care of his people.

Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

The emphasis of this verse is in the Lord: Delight yourself in the Lord. In Psalm 37 the psalmist speaks about the injustices of life. The Psalm begins by saying: “Do not be angry with the wicked or envy those who commit injustice.” Then we are given a list of wonderful advice: trust in the Lord, do good, delight in the Lord, commit your way to the Lord, trust in him.

In other words, do not focus on the earthly or human beings. All of that will fail you, people will fail you. Focus on the Lord God Almighty, remember his kindness and his faithfulness to you. Enjoy the blessings he has bestowed on you until today. He will continue to help you and surprise you with his loving presence and his care. Delight in it!

Psalm 100:1

Shout joyfully to the Lord, you inhabitants of all the earth. (Psalm 100:1)

This verse calls all the inhabitants of the earth to honor God, to acknowledge him with joy. Every day, God blesses all human beings with sunshine, rain, food, the beauty of nature, etc. The psalmist calls everyone to recognize with joy the great work of God and to praise him with joy.

1 John 4:19

We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

Everyone who has received Jesus as their Lord and Savior has experienced the power of God’s love. God loved us first! He sent his Son Jesus into the world so that we might live for him. God did not leave us hopeless or lost in our sins. He sent Jesus to live on earth and to die on the cross as a sign of his great love for each one of us.

Our hearts are transformed when we experience God’s love. We love God for what he has done for us, and we also extend love to other people. One of the most important characteristics of the children of God is to love God above all things and his neighbor as himself (Matthew 22: 36-38). “And he has given us this commandment: He who loves God must also love his brother” (1 John 4:21).

1 Corinthians 16:14

Do everything with love. (1 Corinthians 16:14)

Paul wrote to the church at Corinth that love must be the motivation behind their every action. It must be the same for us today. Just as it was convenient for the church then to act in love in the midst of any circumstance, many things would be different today if each one of God’s children decided to be filled with the Father’s love by walking according to him. Let’s impact our environment with the love of God.

John 10:30

The Father and I are one. (John 10:30)

Jesus was at a party and the Jews kept asking him if he was the Christ. Jesus replied that he had already told them that, but that they did not believe him because they were not part of his flock.

He went on to say, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, nor can anyone snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and from the hand of the Father no one can snatch them. The Father and I are one” (John 10:27-30).

Jesus affirmed his deity, the fact that he and the Father are one unit. No one can snatch the sheep (his children from him) out of his hand or out of the Father’s hand because they are both one. Clinging to Jesus we are clinging to the Father and no one will ever be able to snatch his children from his firm, powerful and protective hand.

1 Thessalonians 5:17

Pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Praying is talking to God. It is beautiful and important to talk with our heavenly Father! To pray without ceasing we do not need to be in a special place. We can talk to God anytime and anywhere. It is true that it is beneficial to have a moment of the day set aside to pray and read the Word of God. But let’s not forget that we can get closer to God whatever time it is and wherever we are.

With God we can share everything we feel and ask for his help in specific situations. Let us learn to keep our minds and hearts in continuous contact with him. Let us pray without ceasing!
