20 Bible verses to strengthen the spirit

Sometimes life deals us blows that seem to be too strong for us. How good to know that we have the strength that God grants to all who love him!

The children of God are not alone in any circumstance. Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “The Lord himself will go before you and be with you; he will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”

The Lord accompanies us and goes before us. He is our strength at all times and we can trust him. Let’s look at some verses in which we find strength to face difficult times.

1. God sustains us

Fear not, for I am with you; do not worry, because I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
(Isaiah 41:10)

We should not fear or worry. God is with us in the midst of any situation and sustains us with his victorious right hand. We know that he has already won the battle, our lives belong to him forever. No matter what difficulty we are facing, his hand sustains us so that we can go forward leaning on him. Let us always trust in his power.

2. We count on God’s help

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him;
I get help from him.
My heart leaps for joy, and with songs I will give thanks.
(Psalm 28:7)

God grants us the strength we need in the midst of our difficulties and trials. He puts a protective shield around us, we can trust that his help and his defense will come at the right time. Let’s not forget to offer him songs of gratitude for everything he does for us.

3. His power is in us

But he said to me: “My grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will rather gladly flaunt my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may remain upon me. That is why I rejoice in weaknesses, insults, privations, persecutions and difficulties that I suffer for Christ; Because when I am weak, then I am strong.
(2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

We can learn something new in the midst of every situation. The apostle Paul also had illnesses and difficulties, but he learned to rejoice in the midst of all of them. They insulted him, they persecuted him, he suffered greatly for the love of Christ, but he knew that God never abandoned him. Like Paul, we also have the sustaining power of God that renews our strength and helps us continue steadfast in him.

4. Our heritage

My body and my spirit may fail, but God strengthens my heart;
he is my eternal inheritance.
(Psalm 73:26)

If we focus on ourselves, on our fragile bodies and our imperfections, we will faint. We receive strength when we fix our eyes on God, on his power and on the inheritance of eternal life as his children. Our problems here are temporary, but our inheritance is eternal, full of salvation and joy. Everything else will be left behind forever.

5. God does not tire

Don’t you know? Haven’t you heard? The Lord is the eternal God, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not get tired or fatigued, and his intelligence is unfathomable. He strengthens the weary and increases the strength of the weak.
(Isaiah 40:28-29)

Sometimes we find it hard to understand the greatness and power of God. We need to remember that he is the creator of everything, that he knows us completely and is attentive to everything that happens. He works at all times in favor of his children, he does not rest day or night. We can turn to God at any time for him to give us new strength and help us in the midst of the daily grind. He is not surprised by anything that happens to us, his eyes are on the whole Earth and his hand is ready to act in favor of those who fear him.

6. The joy of God strengthens us

Do not be sad, for the joy of the Lord is our strength.
(Nehemiah 8:10b)

Many times we get discouraged when we see the magnitude of our problems. This can weaken our hope. We must stay close to God asking him to renew us with his joy, to help us fix our eyes on his power and the strength he gives us. The joy of the Lord is not a passing joy. It is a certainty full of peace and trust that drives us to move forward trusting that he will work.

7. We can take refuge in God

Take refuge in the Lord and in his strength, always seek his presence!
(1 Chronicles 16:11)

Our struggles and difficulties must not paralyze us. We must actively seek God’s presence because that is where we find the new strength we need. God is our refuge and, as the good refuge that he is, he protects us from the attacks of the enemy. Let us not stop going to him in prayer at any time to receive the renewing and refreshing balm that will encourage us to continue and persevere.

8. God is bigger than the circumstances

God is our shelter and strength, our sure help in times of distress.
Therefore, we will not fear even if the earth crumbles and the mountains sink to the bottom of the sea.
(Psalm 46:1-2)

We get overwhelmed by fixing our eyes on the circumstances around us. It would not be so if we focused on the greatness and power of God. There is nothing and no one greater or more powerful than him! Even in the midst of earthquakes, hurricanes or other catastrophes, we can experience the peace of God, that which is born from the full confidence of knowing that we are in his hands and that he is in control of everything.

9. Let us not doubt the faithfulness of God

But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.
(2 Thessalonians 3:3)

In the midst of any situation we need to remember that God is always faithful. Others may fail us, but he will never fail us. We know that when we turn to him, he gives us the dose of strength and protection we need to be able to move forward. God protects us in the midst of danger, and from him we receive the physical, spiritual or emotional strength to advance and win in his name.

10. In God we are firm and secure

The Lord is my rock, my shelter, my deliverer;
It is my God, the rock in which I take refuge.
(2 Samuel 22:2)

Do you remember times when God worked in a wonderful way? Like David, you can strengthen your faith by remembering God’s work in your life through the years. Remember how he manifested his power then, how he protected you and helped you. Today you can also feel firm and secure in God: he is your rock and you can take refuge in him.

11. You can trust

God is my salvation!
I will trust him and not fear.
The Lord is my strength
the Lord is my song;
he is my salvation!
(Isaiah 12:2)

Trust in God will help you overcome fear. Knowing that our strength is found in God brings peace and a song to the heart. God will work, he always takes care of his own.

Our greatest hope? The sufferings of today are not eternal. Jesus will return to look for his people! And our going with him will mark the beginning of an eternity without pain, without tears, without suffering.

13. There is a safe shelter

The fear of the Lord is a sure stronghold
that serves as a refuge for children.
(Proverbs 14:26)

The reverential fear of the Lord helps us to recognize his attributes. His love, his greatness, his power and all that he is, works in favor of his children and affirms the trust we can have in him in the midst of any situation. We can take refuge in our Lord with peace of mind, in him we have shelter forever.

14. The Lord does not abandon you

Those who know your name trust in you,
because you, Lord, never abandon those who seek you.
(Psalm 9:10)

Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is an impregnable tower; the righteous run to it and are saved.” There is much strength in remembering that we serve the great I AM! As it has been, so it is and will be for all eternity. And he will never abandon us! Glory be to him!

15. Freedom from fear!

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
who will I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
who can frighten me?
(Psalm 27:1)

We must never forget that we have the company of God and the salvation that he grants us. When threats come into our lives, we must remember that he who is in us is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). Let us go forward day after day, free from fear!

16. We have good management

Guide me, for you are my rock and my fortress,
lead me for the love of your name.
(Psalm 31:3)

If the Lord is our guide, we will arrive at a safe port. We can go through storms and difficulties, but if we let ourselves be guided by him and stand on him as our rock, everything will work for our good. We will see good fruit sprout in the midst of any situation, because we have the direction and strength that come from the Lord.

17. The antidote against evil

The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord;
he is your strength in times of trouble.
The Lord helps them and delivers them;
delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they put their trust in him.
(Psalm 37:39-40)

God helps and delivers those who put their faith and trust in him. In the midst of times of trouble, he is the strength of each of them. Those who trust in the Lord will experience his salvation and care in the midst of any circumstance. Evil will not defeat them!

18. Everything is possible for God

Oh Lord my God! You, with your great strength and your mighty arm, have made the heavens and the earth. There is nothing impossible for you.
(Jeremiah 32:17)

How is it not going to strengthen us to know that there is nothing impossible with God? We serve the almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. He has the power to help us and deliver us from all evil. Let us not doubt his strength or his power to intervene on our behalf.

19. His presence strengthens us

Take refuge in the Lord and in his strength,
always look for his presence!
(1 Chronicles 16:11)

The presence of the Lord renews us completely. If we need strength, our priority should be spending time with our beloved Lord and Savior. It is in his presence that we find fullness of joy, pleasures at his right hand forever (Psalm 16:11). Let’s go to the Lord!

20. My strength comes from God

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
(Philippians 4:13)

The children of God can move forward in any situation because our strength comes from God. The apostle Paul had lived in the midst of scarcity and also in abundance. But he stood firm and joyful at all times because the presence and strength of God sustained him. He was clear about his calling and his mission and above all, he knew who he trusted.
