The Bible was organized by literary styles. This organization facilitates the understanding of Scripture itself in a harmonious and linear way.

There are groups of books in chronological order – ordered by dates – but much of the Bible does not follow this structure, as there is no exact definition of the events narrated. Furthermore, there are books that were written in the same period and others that cover the same subject.

Today there are a variety of study Bibles on the market, and there is also the option of a chronological Bible. This type of Bible is a good complement to Bible study.

Understanding the table: The books are ordered vertically, from oldest to recent. Books that appear horizontally were written in the same period or deal with the same subject, and are also distinguished by color.

Poetic and prophetic books are organized by the time in which the authors lived. The books of the New Testament are organized in order of authorship. It is worth noting that this table is not organized in the exact order of facts, as it is an estimated projection.

What is the order of the Bible?

The Bible is a collection of 66 books – inspired by God. The Bible brings together writings from the period between 1500-1400 BC and 100 AD Despite the immense and ancient chronological line, the Bible was organized into literary groups. See the books of the Bible in order of literary styles:

Pentateuch – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Historical Books – Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther.
Poetic Books – Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Songs.
Major Prophets – Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel.
Minor Prophets – Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Histories – Apostles’ acts.
Epistles or Cards – Romans, I and II Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, I and II Thessalonians, I and II Timothy, Titus and Philemon (written by Paul). And Hebrews, James, I and II Peter, I, II and III John and Jude (various authors).
Revelation – Apocalypse

The order in which the Bible is arranged – by literary genres – makes it easier for us to consult and understand it.

Although we have the impression that the Bible is in chronological order – because some books follow this sequence – she is not entirely disposed that way. For example, poetic books were organized in order of relevance. And if we only followed the chronological order, the book of Job would come before Exodus, which would take away the organization of the Pentateuch.
