(Heb., rekhab, band of horsemen).
1. One of Ishbosheth’s assassins, a son of Saul (2Sa 4:5-11).
2. An early ancestor of the clan of the Kenites, who later became identified with the tribe of Judah (1Ch 2:55). Rechab was the founder of the Rechabite order (2Ki 10:15ff.). Jeremiah used the example of the Rechabites and his obedience to his father in not drinking wine as a method of censuring the nation for their lack of obedience to God (Jer 35:1-19). The Rechabites, though thirsty, refused to drink wine before violating the faith; the Israelites, having divine blessings, had broken the covenant (Jer 35:12-16).
