Zadok (Heb. Tsâdôq, “just”; name that appears on the handle of an old Heb. vessel and on an old seal of the same origin; Gr. Sadok, Zadok, Saddóux). 1. Maternal grandfather of King Jotham of Judah (2Ki 15:33). 2. Priest descended from Zadok 3, and ancestor of Ezra (1Ch 6:12; 9:11; Ezr 7:2; Neh 11:11; but these passages may not all refer to the same person). 3. One of the 2 chief priests during the reign of David. He was a descendant of Aaron through Eleazar (1Ch 24:3), son of Ahitub (2Sa 8:17) and one of the princes of the northern tribes who came to Hebron in order to invite David to be king of the whole nation (1Ch 12:23, 28). He and Abiathar, who had been David’s chief priests while David was still on the run from Saul, shared his duties and rights as equals (2Sa 17:15; 19:11; 20:25). When Absalom rebelled, the 2 priests wanted to join David and follow him into his exile, but he asked them to stay in Jerusalem (15: 24,29). After his victory over Absalom, he sent them to convince the elders of Judah to invite him back to the capital (2Sa 19:11). Near the end of David’s reign the 2 men disagreed over who should be his successor to the throne. Abiathar supported Adonijah’s failed attempt to seize the kingdom. Zadok remained faithful to David, and both he and the prophet Nathan succeeded in having Solomon crowned before Adonijah’s efforts reached their goal (1Ki 1:7,8,32-45). As a result of his attitude, Abiathar was deposed from the priesthood by Solomon and sent to his home in Anathoth (2:26,27). Zadok remained the only high priest (v 35) and continued to hold that position until his death. 4. Son of Baana; he assisted Nehemiah in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem (Neh 3:4). Perhaps the same person mentioned as Zadok 6. 5. Son of Immer; he helped Nehemiah rebuild the wall of Jerusalem (Neh 3:29). Perhaps he is the same person mentioned as Zadok 7. 6. Prominent Jew who put his seal on the Nehemiah covenant (Neh 10:21). Possibly Zadok 4 himself. 7. Write whom Nehemiah appointed as treasurer of the temple (Neh 13:13). He may be the same Zadok 5. 8. Member of the tribe of Judah who figures in the genealogy of Jesus according to Matthew (Mat 1:14).

(Just). Name of people from the OT.

1. Priest of David’s time. He initially shared functions with his companion † ¢ Abiathar (2Sa 8:17; 2Sa 20:25). When David was fleeing because of the rebellion of †¢Absalom, S. and Abiathar took out †œthe ark of the covenant of God† , but the king asked them to return to Jerusalem and tell him what they could know, which they did through of their children (2Sa 15:24-37; 2Sa 17:15). Restored to the throne, David used S. and Abiathar to summon various leaders to ratify their support (2Sa 19:11). Again S. and Abiathar appear together, called by David to bring the ark to Jerusalem (1Ch 15:11-12). It seems that from that moment S. was left in charge “of the tabernacle of the Lord in the high place that was in Gibeon” (1Ch 16:39), Abiathar going to court and leaving his son with S. †¢Abimelech (1Ch 18:16).

Nearing David’s death, Abiathar was part of the †¢Adonijah conspiracy, but S. was not (1Ki 1:8, 1Ki 1:26). For this reason, David ordered him to anoint Solomon as king, and once he was anointed, he made him “priest instead of Abiathar” (1 Kings 1:32-45). In this way he ended the lineage of † ¢ Eli in the high priesthood. All priests thereafter are called of the “sadoquist” line. S. had a son named †¢Azarías who was a high official of Solomon (1 Kings 4:2). At the feast for the inauguration of the †¢temple, the Israelites anointed Solomon again †œfor prince, and S. for priest† (1Ch 29:22). The descendants of S. were distinguished by their adherence to the worship of Jehovah, even in the days of religious relaxation in Judah, which was praised by the prophet Ezekiel (Eze 40:46; Eze 43:19; Eze 44:15).

2. Father of †¢Jerusa, the mother of king †¢Jotham (2Ki 15:32-33; 2Ch 27:1).

. Character in the descendants of Levi. Son of †¢Ahitub (1Ch 6:12).

. “a valiant and mighty youth” of the Levites who joined David when he fled from Saul (1Ch 12:28). It is possible that it is the same #1.

. Character who collaborated in the restoration of the wall of Jerusalem in the time of Nehemiah. Son of Baana (Neh 3:4).

. Character who collaborated in the restoration of the wall of Jerusalem in the time of Nehemiah. Son of Immer (Neh 3:29).

. Scribe of Nehemiah times. One of those who were appointed “by stewards” to supervise the work “in the house of God” (Neh 13:13-14).

. Character in the ancestry of the Lord Jesus (Mat 1:14).

vet, = “fair”, “straight”. (a) Descendant of Eleazar, the son of Aaron (1 Chron. 24:3). Son of Ahitub (2 Sam. 8:17). He was undoubtedly the courageous man who accompanied the tribal chiefs to Hebron to transfer Saul’s crown to David (1 Chron. 12:27, 28). At the beginning of David’s reign, Zadok was high priest at the same time as Abiathar (2 Sam. 8:17). When Absalom revolted, Zadok and Abiathar remained faithful to David by following him in fleeing from him. The king ordered them to return to Jerusalem to watch events unfold (2 Sam. 15:24-29). After Absalom’s death, David sent word to Zadok and Abiathar that he should suggest to the elders that they call the king back (2 Sam. 19:11). When Adonijah tried to usurp the old king’s throne, Zadok remained loyal to David, while Abiathar sided with the rebellious Adonijah against Solomon (1 Kings 1:7, 8). The monarch learned of the plot; he commanded Zadok and the prophet Nathan to confer the royal anointing on Solomon (1 Kings 1:32-45). Solomon stripped Abiathar of the high priesthood, a position Zadok then held alone until his death (1 Kings 2:26, 27; cf. 4:4). Thus, this high function passed to the line of Eleazar. (See HIGH PRIEST.) (b) Priest of the line of high priests, father of Shallum (1 Chron. 6:12). He descended from the second Ahitub (1 Chr. 6:12; Ezra 7:2) and from the second Meraiot (1 Chr. 9:11; Neh. 11:11). (c) Father of Jerusa, who was the wife of King Uzziah and mother of King Jotham (2 Kings 15:33; 2 Chron. 27:1). (d) Son of Baana, he restored a part of the fortifications of Jerusalem (Neh. 3:4). It is possible that he is the same one who adhered to the covenant (Neh. 10:21). (e) Priest, son of Imer. He restored the fortification in the area in front of his house (Neh. 3:29). This is probably the scribe whom Nehemiah made one of the chief treasurers of the Temple (Neh. 13:13). (f) Ancestor of the Lord Jesus (Mt. 1:14).

(from a root meaning: “to be straight”).

1. Prominent priest related to King David. He was a descendant of Aaron through the line of the high priest Eleazar. (1Ch 6: 3-8, 50-53.) He is also called a seer. (2Sa 15:27) Zadok was a youth ““mighty in valor” and one of the tribal chiefs who lent his support to the Davidic monarchy (1Ch 12:27, 28), and from then on he maintained his allegiance to David. (2Sa 8:15, 17; 20:25; 1Ch 18:16)
Zadok and Abiathar (whenever the two are mentioned, Zadok is first, perhaps because he was also a prophet) accompanied the ark of the covenant when David had it brought to Jerusalem, and afterward Zadok continued to officiate for a time at Gibeon, where was the tabernacle. (1Ch 15:11, 14; 16:39) When Absalom rebelled, Zadok and the Levites took the Ark out of the city to take with them as they accompanied David in his flight from Jerusalem, but David sent them back to Jerusalem. city and appointed Zadok and others as intermediaries to convey information to him. (2Sa 15:23-29, 35, 36; 17:15, 16; 18:19-27) When the rebellion ended, Zadok and Abiathar played an important role in making David welcome in Jerusalem. (2Sa 19: 11-14) Late in his reign, David organized the Levitical temple services with the help of Zadok and Abiathar’s son Ahimelech. (1Ch 24:3, 6, 30, 31)
Unlike Abiathar, Zadok did not support Adonijah’s attempt to usurp the throne; therefore David appointed him to anoint Solomon as king. (1Ki 1:7, 8, 26, 32-46) Zadok was not the highest priest during the reigns of Saul and David, but because of his consistent loyalty, which contrasted with that of the high priest Abiathar, Solomon made him high priest. priest while he drove Abiathar out of Jerusalem. This action fulfilled the prophecy that Jehovah spoke against the house of Eli. (1Ki 2:26, 27, 35) The later mention of “Zadok and Abiathar” at 1 Kings 4:4 probably has a historical meaning. Josephus states that Zadok was the first high priest of Solomon’s temple. (Jewish Antiquities, book X, chap. VIII, sec. 6) At 1 Chronicles 27:16, 17 Zadok is mentioned as head of the house of Aaron. According to the Bible, Zadok’s line held the high priesthood until the time of Darius the Persian (probably Darius II). (1Ki 4:2; 1Ch 6:8-15; 2Ch 31:10; Ne 12:22) The priests Ezekiel saw in vision in the temple were “sons of Zadok.” (Eze 40:46; 43:19; 44:15; 48:11)

4. One of those who rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem after the exile; son of Baana (Ne 3:4) He, or a representative of a family of the same name, signed the proposed national covenant shortly thereafter. (Ne 9:38; 10:1, 14, 21)

5. Another of those who assisted in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem; son or descendant of Imer, who…
