Psalm 91 complete

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High takes refuge in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I say to the Lord: “You are my refuge, my fortress, the God in whom I trust.”
3 Only he can deliver you from the traps of the hunter and from deadly plagues,
4 for he will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness will be yourshield and Buckler!
5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the plague that lurks in the shadows nor the plague that destroys at noon.
7 A thousand may fall to your left, and ten thousand to your right, but it will not affect you.
8 You will only have to open your eyes wide, to see the wicked receive what they deserve.
9 Since you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High for your protection,
10 no evil will befall you, no calamity will come to your home.
11 For he will command his angels to watch over you in all your ways.
12 With their own hands they will lift you up so that you do not trip over any stone.
13 You will crush the lion and the viper; you will trample beasts and serpents!
14 “I will deliver him, because he welcomes me; I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in moments of anguish; I will free him and fill him with honors.
16 I will fill him with many years of life and I will make him enjoy my salvation».

Explanation of Psalm 91

In verse 4 the psalmist says that God will protect under his “wings” those who trust in him. God himself, when he inspired this Psalm, wanted to demonstrate all the love, tenderness and protection enjoyed by those who put their trust in him. God also reveals his strength by declaring himself a protective shield.

Whoever trusts in God does not need to fear “the terror of the night” or sickness or danger because he is not alone. Almighty God is with him!

Verse 10 says that no evil will befall him and no calamity will come to the home of one who takes refuge in the Most High. This does not mean that he will never encounter difficulties or problems but that even in the midst of bad things he will be able to see the manifestation of God’s power and his goodness.

In verse 11 we see that God sends his angels to take care of his children. In the midst of the greatest calamities or even death itself, the children of God will also see his power in action.

From verse 13 onwards we see that those who take refuge in God will do great things in his name and will see how he works on their behalf. Every experience of life will serve to bring you closer to the eternal inheritance in Christ Jesus. As Romans 8:28 says, all things work together for good to those who love God.

Contrary to what many may think, having a Bible open to Psalm 91 does not offer any protection. The only thing that can guarantee that protection is having a personal relationship with God, a close and trusting relationship.

Do you want to live confidently in God’s protection? Make your abode in it! Believe in Jesus! The Holy Spirit will be in you and you will live forever in the shelter of the Most High.
