History of the Virgin of the Way
The Virgen del Camino is a Marian dedication that arises in Spain. This virgin is the patron saint of the city of Pamplona and the region of León.
Legend has it that on July 2, 1505, a shepherd from Velilla de la Reina named Alvar Simón Fernandez was herding his cattle when the Virgin Mary appeared to him out of nowhere among incandescent lights. The apparition took place in a place called El Humilladero where today there is a chapel.
In 1914, the Catholic Church named the Virgen del Camino as the patron saint of the León Region and she is also known as the patron saint of travelers and roads. On September 15, 1930, she was canonized and on that day the liturgical celebration of the Virgin takes place.
