Commentary on Mark 15:5 – Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Bible – Biblical Commentary

But Jesus even with that did not answer anything, so that Pilate was amazed.

15:5
— But Jesus did not respond even with that; so that Pilate marveled—Pilate had already declared Jesus innocent. Now the patience of Jesus in his persistent silence, in the face of his accusers, amazes him. Jesus in no way seeks to ingratiate himself with his judges. He who has the truth does not need such tactics. Compare Isaiah 53:7.

Not even with that did he answer: The text says here “no longer answered anything else.” BJ provides a better and preferable translation: “But Jesus did not answer any more.” Pilate was very surprised: BL suggests “Pilate did not know what to think.”

Pilate was amazed. The reason was because of the Lord’s attitude not to defend himself against his accusers, especially since according to Roman law, the accused who did not defend himself was found guilty.
