The first sentence of the Bible already tells us something about who God is. In Genesis 1:1 we read that God is the Creator of everything. God is the be supreme who created everything in the universe.
God, in the beginning, created the heavens and the earth.
(Genesis 1:1)
This implies that being the Creator of all, God is eternal. He was already before everything. God has been and always will be, he had no beginning nor will he have an end. God will never cease to be.
Since before the mountains were born and you created the earth and the world, from ancient times and until the last times, you are God.
(Psalm 90:2)
But that’s not the only thing the Bible tells us about God. Many verses tell us about him and help us to know him better. However, we must remember that here on Earth we will never fully understand God. Why? Because God is God. Our finite mind cannot understand all its greatness.
Even so, God himself chose to reveal himself to us. He makes himself known to us through creation and through his Word. Psalm 19:1 says the following:
The heavens declare the glory of God, the firmament proclaims the work of his hands.
(Psalm 19:1)
God reveals himself to us every day, continually. He loves us and wants to have a personal relationship with us. For this reason, although we cannot see him in the physical realm, he has left glimpses of him in nature.
We can also get to know God better by reading the Bible, his Word. Let’s look at some of the things the Bible tells us about God.
God is our Father
God is not only the powerful Creator of all that is, he is someone much closer: he is our Father! It’s nice to know that we can get closer to God and talk freely with him. Jesus, God incarnate, taught us to pray saying “Our Father” (Matthew 6:9-13). Why did he do it? Among other things, because God wants us to talk to him and relate to him. God does not want to be a distant God, he is by our side, he wants us to enjoy his company and allow him to be part of our lives.
The meaning of the Our Father prayer
I will be a father to you, and you will be my sons and my daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.
(2 Corinthians 6:18)
God is the best Father we can hope for or imagine. His heart is full of compassion and love for his children. God understands our situations, our frustrations and we can lean on him at all times.
As compassionate is the Lord to those who fear him as a father is to his children.
He knows our condition; he knows we are made of clay.
(Psalm 103:13-14)
God is the only one worthy of worship
Our worship should be for God alone, there is no one else who deserves it. Just before beginning his ministry on earth, Jesus was tempted in the desert. The devil told him that he would give him all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus would worship him. What did Jesus reply?
Go away, Satan! Jesus told him. Because it is written: “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only”.
(Matthew 4:10)
God is the only one worthy of worship. He is the Creator of all, all things subsist in him (Colossians 1:16-17). Why should we worship something created instead of worshiping the Creator?
In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, we read that there will come a time when everything and everyone will worship God. We have the privilege and the joy of being able to do it now. Let us worship only God!
And I heard every creature in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and in the sea, everyone in creation, singing: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be praise! and honor, glory and power, for ever and ever!”
(Revelation 5:13)
What is God like?
1. It is only one but manifests itself in three forms
There is only one God, but he has chosen to manifest himself in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is what we call the Trinity. The word trinity means three in one and that is the reality: they are three manifestations of one God.
Each of the persons of the Trinity has specific functions, but in reality everything that happens is the work of God because he is one. The Trinity is a mystery difficult to understand that points to the immensity of God.
Jesus himself said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). In fact, one of the moments in which we see with more clarity the manifestation of the three persons of the Trinity was during the baptism of Jesus. The Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and rested on Jesus while the voice of the Father was heard from heaven.
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. At that moment the sky was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God come down like a dove and settle on him. And a voice from heaven said: “This is my beloved Son; I am very pleased with him.”
(Matthew 3:16-17)
2. It’s love
The essence of God is love, everything he does is anchored in his great love. His love is totally pure, true and has no end. From God we have received the greatest and most perfect sample of love: Jesus Christ!
And we have come to know and believe that God loves us.
God is love. He who remains in love remains in God, and God in him.
(1 John 4:16)
For God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save it through him.
(John 3:16-17)

3. It never changes
God is immutable, he never changes. He is and always will be the same. That is why we can fully trust him and his promises. The world we live in is constantly changing, but God remains the same, his nature does not change. What he has been, he is and will be for all eternity.
I, the Lord, do not change.
(Malachi 3:6a)
God is not a mere mortal to lie and change his mind. Does he not keep what he promises or carry out what he says?
