TITLE: The Triumphal Entry of JESUS into Jerusalem as the Messiah

TEXT: Matthew 21:1-11

“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples 2 with this charge: “Go to the village opposite you, and right there you will find a donkey tied, and a little donkey with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs you, but that he will bring you back.” 4 This happened so that what was said by the prophet would be fulfilled: 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Look, your king is coming to you, humble and riding on a donkey, on a little donkey, the offspring of a beast of burden.’ 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, on which Jesus sat. 8 There were many people who spread their cloaks on the road; others cut branches from the trees and scattered them on the road. 9 Both the people who went before him and those who followed him shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” -Hosanna in the high! 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was moved. -Who is this? they asked. 11 “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee,” the crowds replied.”

INTRODUCTION:

On this day we are celebrating the TRIUMPHAL ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM, also known as Palm or Palm Sunday. This is a great day for Christianity, as we remember that our Savior entered as the Messiah before going to Calvary’s Cross, but that should also remind us that we await his return one day to REIGN here on earth. May GOD bless his Word preached from him this morning.

LESSON:

  1. background. The FOUR Gospels narrate the Triumphal Entry of JESUS to Jerusalem. It is important to note the importance of this event which is the FIRST day of what we know as the week of the Passion of the Christ.

    1. The Gospels mention the two villages or towns that were at the foot of the Mount of Olives, Bethany and Bethphage on the road to Jericho, according to Rabbinic writings, about a mile from the Eastern entrance to the city of Jerusalem.i

    1. The apostle John tells us that the LORD JESUS had come to Bethany where Lazarus and his two sisters were: Mary and Martha, SIX days before the Passover (John 12:1). So we can be sure that it was the rest day, Saturday, where Mary anointed the feet of the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

    1. There were many people in Jerusalem because of the Passover. MacArthur tells us in his commentary that according to a Census taken 10 years after these events, the number of lambs slaughtered on Passover is said to be 260,000. Since a Passover lamb could be shared with up to 10 people, it is estimated that there were 2,000,000 people in Jerusalem.ii

    1. According to the account in the Gospel of John, the people were following him from Bethany, but the apostle John tells us that the people who were in Jerusalem came out to meet the LORD with palm leaves (John 12:12-13).

      1. So here we have TWO MULTITUDES, one followed the LORD JESUS from Bethany, and the other crowd received him at the entrance to Jerusalem.

        1. It must have been a great spectacle since surely there were thousands and thousands of people who received him at the entrance to Jerusalem.

        1. It was a DIVINE event, since the Son of GOD, the Messiah, arrived riding on a colt to Jerusalem as the KING OF KINGS, while the people shouted HOSANNA!

  1. Planned by JESUS CHRIST Himself. Two scriptures are fulfilled in this event which had been predicted hundreds of years ago.

    1. The Scriptures are:

      1. (Isaiah 62:11) “Here is what the Lord has proclaimed to the ends of the earth: “Say to the daughter of Zion: “Here comes your Savior! He brings his prize with him; the reward of it accompanies it. ”»

      1. (Zechariah 9:9) “Rejoice, daughter of Zion! Shout for joy, daughter of Jerusalem! Look, your king comes to you, just, saving and humble. He comes riding on a donkey, on a colt, a donkey’s foal. »

    1. The Rabbis applied these Scriptures to the Messiah.iii The Text of Zechariah speaks of a King who will rule over Israel. There is no doubt that that King is our LORD JESUS CHRIST. The Jews, as we have already said, took this prophecy as Messianic,iv and the testimony of the Gospels credits this prophecy to the LORD JESUS.

      1. Notice that the first fulfillment was at the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, and its full fulfillment will be in the Kingdom of the LORD JESUS in the Millennium.

    1. We must also clarify that this was not a “chance” event, but that the LORD JESUS in His Sovereignty had planned it. All these steps that we can find in the Ministry of the LORD JESUS, were not by chance as we have already said, but were ordered by his Sovereignty.

      1. So here we have the LORD JESUS entering Jerusalem OPENLY as the MESSIAH KING.

  1. DAVID’S SON. (Matthew 21:10) «Both the people who went before him and those who went behind, shouted: – Hosanna to the Son of David! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” -Hosanna in the high!”

    1. Hosanna means “Save now” and BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD quotes Psalm 118:25-26:

      1. “Lord, give us salvation! Lord, grant us victory! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.”

      1. We also remember how in His Incarnation, the Angels sang:

        1. (Luke 2:14) “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those who enjoy his good will.”

        1. The arrival of the KING OF KINGS was not to Reign as mortal kings do, but to give His Life for sinners, and thus RECONCILE human beings with GOD. The PEACE that only GOD can give, can be acquired when the human being finds PEACE with GOD through JESUS CHRIST.

      1. The Gospel of John tells us that the people took PALM BRANCHES and went out to meet him (John 12:13).

        1. The palm branches represented the desire to be liberated, since the palm had been the symbol on the coins of the second Maccabean revolt.vi

          1. That had happened a century and a half before JESUS CHRIST.

        1. But notice that the people wanted to be FREE from the RULE of the Romans, but not from THEIR SINS.

        1. The SAVIOR of the world was among them, however, they REJECTED him for not being the deliverer they expected.

    1. HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID was a Messianic cry. In other words, the Son of David was the Messiah or the Christ whom the people were waiting for.

      1. That should remind us of blind Bartimaeus as they left Jericho, who only a few days earlier had been healed by JESUS. But Bartimaeus claimed JESUS as the SON OF DAVID (Mark 11:46-52).

    1. Whose Son was the Son of David? That question was asked by JESUS himself to the Pharisees on the THIRD day of Passion week. That is, TWO days after the Triumphal Entry, which was TUESDAY.

      1. (Matthew 22:41-45) “While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Christ? Who’s his father? “David’s,” they replied. 43 —Then how is it that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him “Lord”? He states: 44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.'” 45 If David calls him “Lord,” then how can she be his son? ? 46 No one could answer him a single word, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.”

      1. The Pharisees’ response was quick and clear: From David. But they had not paid attention to other Texts that spoke of the CHRIST as much more than the SON OF DAVID.

        1. As John Calvin said: the scribes were wrongly mistaken in expecting the Redeemer to come only from the earth and from human stock.vii

        1. Calvin was right, because the evidence said much more than SON OF MAN.

    1. The Pharisees, like many of the people, were waiting for a MAN Messiah who would free them from the dominion of the Romans.

      1. The apostles of the LORD JESUS believed that JESUS was DIVINE and the Messiah, but they did not understand why the SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST on Calvary’s Cross were necessary.

      1. Here we have the problem of not understanding that they needed the FORGIVENESS OF THEIR SINS, and that is the example that the LORD JESUS showed them, FORGIVING SINS, thus showing His Divinity, and also that this was the MISSION or the reason why which He as the CHRIST, had become MAN to give His Life on the Cross of Calvary for the sins of humanity.

    1. Now coming back to the SON OF DAVID, the Text of Psalm 110 says TWO things about the LORD JESUS:

      1. The first is that JESUS, the SON OF GOD and SON OF DAVID, is seated at the right hand of the Father in Glory.

        1. (Mark 16:19) “After speaking with them, the Lord Jesus was taken up to heaven and sat down at the *right hand of God.”

        1. (1st Corinthians 15:23-25) «but each one in his due order: Christ, the first fruits; later, when he comes, those that belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after destroying all dominion, authority, and power. 25 For Christ must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.”

      1. The second is that He is the MEDIATOR between GOD THE FATHER and man.

        1. (Psalm 110:4) “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

        1. Quoted in the Epistle to the Hebrews where the PRIESTHOOD of our LORD and SAVIOR is very well clarified. As PRIEST he is the MEDIATOR between GOD THE FATHER and us.

          1. (1 Timothy 2:5) “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”

      1. But being the SON OF DAVID, he is HEIR to the THRONE of DAVID. Thus the LORD JESUS CHRIST will be reigning on the Throne of David for a thousand years, and then he will continue to reign in the New Jerusalem forever.

  1. The LORDSHIP of JESUS CHRIST. (John 20:26-28) “A week later the disciples were back in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were closed, Jesus entered and, standing in their midst, greeted them. “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. And do not be unbelieving, but man of faith. 28 —My Lord and my God! Thomas exclaimed.

    1. This is a Text that I have been quoting frequently. Thomas had not been present on the DAY OF RESURRECTION when the LORD JESUS had appeared to them.

      1. Thomas, who in the past had shown himself to be a man faithful to the LORD JESUS and ready to give his life for Him, had fallen into a depression of unbelief.

        1. All the experiences with the Savior seem to have been forgotten by Thomas.

      1. But now a week later, the LORD JESUS appears to him and…
