Coin of Greek origin that was worth four drachmas. The Lord Jesus commanded Peter to cast “the hook into the sea, and the first fish” that he caught would have an e inside. (Matt 17:27). The payment of “two drachmas” that was being collected on that occasion was the “temple tax” that every Jew had to pay (Mat 17:24-27). †¢Money. †¢Coins.

stater (stathvr, 4715), a tetradrachmon, or four-drachma coin, originally 224 grains in Tyrian legal tender, but somewhat reduced in weight for the time recorded at Mat 17:24; it was used to pay the temple tax for two people; it was equivalent to about 14.4 grams of silver.¶
