Romans 13:7 Commentary – Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Bible – Biblical Commentary

Pay to all what you owe: to whom tribute, tribute; to which tax, tax; whom I respect, respect; whoever honors, honors.

13:7 — This verse is a summary of what has been said before. To whom the Christian must pay. To the government he owes dues (annual) and taxes (charged on imported and exported merchandise — see Matt 9:9), respect and honor. The Christian faithfully pays. Christ taught the same thing, being on earth (Matt 22:15-22).

Civic loyalty and obedience to God normally go together (Tue 12:17). Must respect Y honor to God above all others, but the tributes and taxes they are equally Christian obligations. In a democratic society Christians have a share in civic authority and therefore must do what they can to see that their actions conform to God’s moral law.

Pay everyone what you owe. “Pay” is the translation of a Greek word that refers to the payment of something due and not to a voluntary contribution, as the term “you must” reinforces. The apostle reiterates that paying taxes is not optional, but mandatory (see note on v.Romans 13:6). tax. Taxes for goods and merchandise. respect… honor. God requires that we show sincere respect and maintain a genuine attitude of high regard for all public officials.
