History of Gauchito Gil

The Gauchito Gil is a figure of popular devotion in Argentina, based on the historical account of the gaucho Antonio Mamerto Gil Núñez. Although it is known that he existed, there are no complete certainties about the concrete data of his passage to immortality as a saint.

It is known that Antonio Gil Núñez was born in Pay Ubre, a town in the province of Corrientes, around 1840. He was assassinated on January 8, 1878, a few kilometers from his town.

Legend has it that Antonio Gil was a rustler who was recruited to fight in the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay but deserted and was persecuted. When he was captured, accused of desertion, he was ordered executed.

The commissioner in charge of executing him under a tree heard the following words from the gaucho: “Don’t kill me, the letter of my innocence is about to arrive” to which the commissioner replied that he would be executed anyway.

At that moment, Antonio Gil replied: “When the letter arrives, you will receive the news that your son is dying from an illness; when you arrive, pray for me and your son will be saved, because today you will be spilling the blood of an innocent

Antonio Gil was executed and then, when the commissioner arrived at his house, he found his son in a very serious state of health. The commissioner prayed for him invoking Antonio Gil and his son was cured. It is said that later the same commissioner returned to the place where the body lay and gave it a decent burial.

It is believed that the news spread throughout the area, and people began to venerate Antonio Gil Núñez, nicknamed him Gauchito Gil. This saint is not endorsed by the Catholic Church but in Argentina his feast is celebrated on January 8.
