Obed (Heb. í”bêd, “servant” or ‘worshiper’; Gr. Ií‡bed or í†bed; Heb. í”dêd, meaning uncertain). 1. Son of Ruth and Boaz (Rth 4:17); he was the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David (Rth 4:21, 22; 1Ch 2:12; Mat 1:5; Luk 3:32). 2. Descendants of Jerameel (1Ch 2:37, 38). 3. David’s mighty man (1Ch 11:47). 4. Korahite Levite, gatekeeper, from the family of Obed-edom (1Ch 26:7). 5. Man whose son, the prophet Azariah, encouraged King Asa of Judah (2Ch 15:1). 6. A man whose son Azariah, an army captain, helped Jehoiada put the young prince Joash on the throne (2Ch 23:1). 7. Prophet of Israel during the reign of King Pekah. He protested against the enslavement of prisoners taken by the king of Israel in a war against Judah and secured his release. They were not only given freedom, but also clothing and food, and the weak among them were provided with mobility (2Ch 28:9-15).

( °vm, vp, “Oded”). 1. Father of Azariah the prophet (2 Chr. 15.1) in the reign of Asa. the vv. 8 has included a marginal gloss or has omitted “Azarias son of” (cf. °vrv2 Y °vm). 2. Prophet of Samaria (2 Chr. 28.9–15) who went out to meet the victorious army of the N kingdom, which was returning with a number of enslaved captives taken from Judah, and tried to convince them to return the slaves. His entreaties, joined by those of some Samaritan leaders, were successful.
