Light (Heb. Lû5, Lû5âh, “almond tree” or “separation”). 1. Primitive name of the city of Bethel* (Gen 28:19; 35:6; Jos 18:13; Jdg 1:23). In Jos 16:2 it is distinguished from Beth-el, so it must be assumed that Beth-el developed as a neighboring town while the old city continued to exist for a time but gradually lost its name. 2. City in the territory of the Hittites, probably in Syria, built by a man of Light, later Bethel, in Palestine. By aiding the enemy, his life was spared when Joseph’s men destroyed the city where his home was. Therefore, he went to the territory of the Hittites and built a city that he called with the name that he had where he had lived (Jdg 1: 22-26). The place has not been identified. 728

The first words attributed to God are Let there be light (Gen 1:3).

God is the Creator of both light and darkness (Isa 45:6-7; 1Jo 1:5) and watches over their orderly succession (Psa 104:20; Amo 4:13); however, the light is superior to the darkness (Ecc 2:13). Most of all, light is the source of life (Ecc 11:7). The word is frequently used as a synonym for being alive (Job 3:20), being born (Job 3:16), the pleasures of life (Psa 97:11), good morning for the righteous (Psa 112:4), or something indispensable for the happiness of the human being (Psa 36:9). Light and truth are related in the Bible (Psa 43:3; compare Psalm 19; Pro 6:23; Isa 51:4). Truth and law give knowledge (Psa 19:8; Psa 139:11-12) and direction (Deu 28:29; Job 22:28; Pro 4:18; compare Mic 7:8). He who receives light becomes light shining outward (Psa 34:5; Ecc 8:1) and inward (Pro 20:27; Dan 5:11). The manifestations of light are the work of the father of lights (Jam 1:17), who lives in the light (Exo 13:21; Psa 104:2; 1Ti 6:16) and confers light as a divine gift. The Scriptures are a lamp or light (2Pe 1:19). Conversion is spoken of as enlightenment (Heb 6:4; Heb 10:32). Believers are children of light (Luk 16:8; 1Th 5:5) and are the light of the world (Mat 5:14). Since the gift can be lost through inactivity (John 5:35; 1Th 5:5-6), the heavenly light must be used as armor or weapon (Rom 13:12; Eph 6:12) in the fight. against the dark. The light is permanently present in Christ (Joh 1:7-9; Heb 1:3) and in the gospel (Acts 26:23; 2Co 4:4).

In the future life there will be no more night (Rev 21:23).

Light (place).

(Heb., light, turn around).

He slept here, and God appeared to him in a dream. To commemorate the occasion Jacob changed the name of the village, calling it Bethel (house of God, Gen 28:17).
2. A village in the land of the Hittites built by a man of Light in Canaan (Jdg 1:26).

In the †¢creation, the l. it was made before the sun (†œAnd God said: Let it be the l.; and it was the l.† ; †œThen God said: Let there be lights…† ). From the beginning, the concepts of him are opposed. and darkness. The difficulty to recognize objects in the dark, to walk and to find one’s way, means that in common language darkness is equated with ignorance. The l., on the other hand, allows you to see things, for which it is compared to knowledge, to understand. The l is related. with the person of God (“Raise above us, O Jehovah, the l. of your face† ; “The Lord is my l.”; †œGod is l.† ). That is why the Lord Jesus says: “I am the light” (Joh 8:12). Believers are “his sons” (Eph 5:8), so they should not walk in darkness.

Lighting a torch or lamp in the dark illuminates things. Thus, the act of understanding something that was not known is compared to illumination (“You will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness”). In this way the conversion of a person to the living and true God is understood (“For God, who commanded that light should shine out of darkness, is the one who has shone in our hearts, to give light to the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of God.” of Jesus Christ† ).

“Walking in the l.” is an expression that means living in the practice of truth and godliness, not participating “in the unfruitful works of darkness” but rather rebuking them (Eph 5:11). That walk in the l. it is required to have “fellowship with one another” and obtain forgiveness of our sins (1Jn 1:5-7).

vet, (a) In addition to references to physical light as existing independently of the sun, and emanating after the sun as a great light, this term is used in the Scriptures very prominently in a moral sense. The light of God is his word by which he reveals himself, and by which he not only reveals the dangers that exist in this scene, but also acts as a lamp to show the true path (Ps. 119: 105). The psalmist asks Jehovah to lift up upon him the light of his countenance (Ps. 4:6), and declared that Jehovah himself was his light (Ps. 27:1). Just as natural light gives strength and health to the body, so God’s light gives joy and strength to the soul. “God is light”, and the Lord Jesus came to earth as the true light that enlightens all men. He not only manifested with his presence all the evil in the world and the falsehood of the claims of the leaders of Israel, but that “the life was the light of men” (Jn. 1: 4; 8:12) . Christians are “light in the Lord” (Eph. 5:8), and are exhorted to walk as “children of light” (1 Thess. 5:5). In the midst of darkness they are to shine as lights in the world (Phil. 2:15). A serious responsibility rests on them, because they must not tarnish the brightness that should characterize them as having in their hearts the light of the glory of the Lord. If the light in the Christian turns into darkness by not walking in the reality of the path of Christ, how great is the darkness! (Mt. 6:23). It has been said that light very appropriately describes God. Light, itself invisible, manifests everything. Christians, as already noted, are “light in the Lord,” and thus manifest the unfruitful deeds of the flesh. On the other hand, it is not said of them what is said only of God, that they be love, because love is the sovereign source of activity in God. God is light (1 Jn. 1:5) and God is love (1 Jn. 4:8). The Christian is light in the Lord, and we are exhorted to love one another, as he He he has loved us (Jn. 15:12). (b) Luz, as a geographical name (see BET-EL).
