JABES – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

1Ch 4:9-10.

Jabes (Heb. Yâbêsh , “dry ”; Heb. Yabêts , of uncertain meaning; however, in 1Ch 4:9 this name is related to “pain”, so that somehow that idea is linked with the name, for which could mean “he saddens” or “sadness”). 1. Shortened form of the place name Jabez Gilead* (1Sa 11:1). 2. Israelite whose son Shallum usurped the throne of Israel but reigned only 1 month (2Ki 15:10). 3. Town in which certain families of scribes lived (1Ch 2:55). It was probably located in Judah. 4. Man from Judah whose mother gave him that name because she had given birth to him in pain (1Ch 4:9). Because of his personal piety, God blessed him and increased his possessions.
