Hur (Heb. Jûr ‘whiteness’, but for Hur 1 and Hur 2 the meaning would possibly be ‘Horus’ or ‘noble’; appears on an old Heb. seal; ac. Hûru ‘child’). 1. Faithful companion of Moses. He along with Aaron held up the arms of Moses during the battle against the Amalekites (Ex 17:10-13). He was associated with Aaron in the administration of the people on Mount Sinai (24:14). Jewish tradition makes him the husband of Mary and brother-in-law of Moses. He possibly he can be identified with Hur 2. Bib.: FJ-AJ iii.2.4. 2. Grandfather of the artist Bezaleel of the tribe of Judah (Exo 31:1, 2; 35:30-33; 38:22; 1Ch 2:20; 2Ch 1:5). Possibly identical to Hur 1. 3. King of Midian killed by Moses (Num 31:8; Josh 13:21). 4. Father of Solomon’s governor on Mount Ephraim (1Ki 4:8). In the DHH version the son is called Ben-hur. 5. Ephrathah’s firstborn (1Ch 2:50; 4:4). 6. Son of Judah (1Ch 4:1). 7. 1. Character that appears several times as an assistant to Moses. He accompanied him to the top of a hill at the time of the fight against Amalek. “Aaron and H. held their hands” because Moses got tired (Exo 17:10-12). He was also left with Aaron to take care of the people when Moses and Joshua went up to the mountain of God (Exo 24:14). According to Josephus, H. was the husband of †¢Mary, the sister of Moses.

veth, (a) A man of Judah, of the family of Hezron (1 Chron. 2:18, 19). He was the grandfather of Bezaleel (1 Chron. 2:20; Ex. 31: 1, 2). Hur and Aaron supported the arms of Moses during the battle against Amalek at Rephidim (Ex. 17:10-12). Moses declared that as he went up Sinai, Aaron and Hur would judge the Israelites. Many centuries later, Josephus asserts that Hur was the husband of Moses’ sister Miriam (Ant. 3:2, 4). The OT records nothing about this. (b) One of the five kings of Midian defeated and killed by Moses (Num. 31:8; Josh. 13:21). (c) Father of one of Solomon’s intendants; he lived in the mountainous region of Ephraim (1 Kings 4:8). 1. Descendant of Judah; he was the son of Caleb and Ephrat, and the grandfather of Bezalel, the craftsman. Some of Hur’s descendants may have settled in Bethlehem. (Ex. 31:2; 35:30; 38:22; 1Ch 2:19, 20, 50, 51, 54; 4:1-4; 2Ch 1:5) This is probably the same person as No. . two.

2. Prominent companion of Moses and Aaron. When the Amalekites attacked Israel, shortly after this nation came out of Egypt, Hur accompanied Moses and Aaron to the top of a hill, and there he and Aaron held Moses’ hands until Jehovah gave Israel victory over them. the amalekites. (Ex 17:8-13) Not long after, Moses and Joshua went up Mount Sinai to continue receiving the Law, leaving Hur and Aaron in charge of the camp. (Ex 24:12-14) It is likely that this is the Hur (No. 1) grandfather of Bezalel, the craftsman of the tabernacle. Josephus wrote that Hur was Miriam’s husband, but the Bible says nothing about it. (Jewish Antiquities, book III, chap. II, sec. 4.)

3. King of Midian; one of the five kings who were under the dominion of the Amorite monarch Sihon, until Israel, while going towards the Promised Land, defeated the latter. (Jos 13:15, 16, 21; Nu 21: 21-24) Hur and his four countrymen later seem to have allied themselves with Balak, the king of Moab, to oppose Israel. (Nu 22:1-7) Led by Jehovah, the Israelites waged war against Midian, killing Hur, along with the four Midianite kings who allied with him, and the greedy prophet Balaam. (Nu 31:1-8.)

4. Father of the commissioner of the mountainous region of Ephraim in charge of supplying food to King Solomon. (1Ki 4:7, 8)

5. Father of Refaya, who collaborated with Nehemiah in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. (Ne 3:9.)
