threneo (qrhnevw, 2354), lament, lament; related to threnos, lamentation, lamentation. It is used: (a) in a general sense, of the disciples during the Lord’s absence (Joh 16:20 “Ye shall mourn”); (b) of those who were saddened by the sufferings and the impending crucifixion of the Lord (Luk 23:27 “were mourning”); the preceding word is kopto, see CRY; (c) of mourning as for the dead (Mat 11:17; Luk 7:32 “We mourn you”).
