Edrei (Heb. ‘Edre’î, “mighty”). 1. One of the cities of residence of King Og of Bashan, whom Moses defeated at the battle of Edrei (Num 21:33-35; Deu 1:4; 3:1, 10; Jos 12:4; 13: 12, 31). It is the present 346 large village of Der ‘~, about 48 km east of the confluence of the Yarmouk and Jordan rivers. Map VI, C-5. 2. Fortified city at Naphtali, near Kadesh (Jos 19:37); unidentified, even though Thutmose III mentions it in his list of Palestinian towns he had conquered.

1. Royal city of Og, the king of Bashan. (Jos 12:4; 13:12) After defeating Sihon the Amorite, the Israelite hosts commanded by Moses “went up,” that is, advanced N., until they met Og’s military force in “the battle from Edrei†, which was apparently the southern border of the kingdom of Bashan. Although Og was the last of the giant Rephaim and may have fielded an impressive army, the Israelites, whom Jehovah had told not to be afraid, annihilated him, his children, and his people, and took possession of his territory. (Nu 21: 33-35; De 3: 1-10) Later, the city was given to Manasseh as part of his inheritance. (Jos 13:31) Edrei is usually associated with the modern city of Der`a, located about 50 km ESE. from the southern end of the Sea of Galilee, near the Yarmouk. Among the ruins found at the site is an underground city that is carved into the rock below the ground level of the city, and in which archaeological excavations have been carried out.
2. Fortified city of Naphtali. (Jos 19:32, 35, 37) It has been associated with modern Tell Khureibeh, about 7 km NNW. of Hazor.

Probably modern Dera, 24 km ENE of Irbid (according to Eusebius); it occupies a strategic location for communications in the Bashan area, and contains ruins dating from the early bronze age.
