Edna N – Biblical Meaning

Song: This is the Day

1. Romans 8:35-39

35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Tribulation, anguish, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or the sword? 36 As it is written:

“Because of you we are dead all day long;

we are considered as sheep to the slaughter.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2. The funeral is a universal custom. It is our attempt to:

a. Remember

b. Honor

c. Offer Comfort

d. Set up

3. Funerals remind us of:

a. The certainty of death (Ecclesiastes 9:5)

b. The brevity of life (James 4:14)

c. The Scarcity of Life (John 10:10)

d. The sovereignty of God and the Reality of Eternity.

4. We preach our funerals because of the way we live. In many ways, Edna lived a full life and has an eternal life to enjoy.

They said they met at an amusement park and after a whirlwind romance they got married.

Eulogy

Bobby and Brenda’s Notes (Donna included the features they describe)

10 A good wife, who will find her?

It is much more precious than jewels.

11 Her husband’s heart trusts in her,

and you will not lack profits.

12 She does him good, and not harm,

every day of his life.

13 Look for wool and linen,

and works with willing hands.

14 It is like the ships of merchants,

>she brings her food from afar.

15 He gets up while it is still night

and feed your house

and tasks to her maidens.

16 He considers a field and buys it;

with the fruit of his hands he plants a vineyard.

17 He girds his loins with strength

and strengthens his arms.

18 He perceives that his merchandise is profitable.

His lamp does not go out at night.

19 She puts her hands on the spinning wheel,

and his hands hold the spindle.

20 She opens her hand to the poor,

p>

and extends his hands to those in need.

21 He fears no snow for his house,

because his whole house is dressed in scarlet.

p>

22 He makes robes;

her dress is of fine linen and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates,

when he sits among the elders of the earth.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them;

give belts to the merchant.

25 Strength and dignity are his clothing,

and laughs at the time to come.

26 He opens his mouth with wisdom,

and the teaching of kindness is upon her tongue.

27 She takes good care of the ways of her house,

and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children rise up and call to bless her;

her husband too, and he praises her:

29 “Many women have done excellently,

but you excel at all.”

30 Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain,

but the woman who fears Jehovah is worthy of praise.

31 Give him of the fruit of his hands,

and let her works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31.10-31

I. The work of a mother

WHAT DOES THE OLD SAY” “The man works from sunrise to sunset, but the woman’s work never ends”.

Mothers do all kinds of work.

– Sew v. 13, 19, 22 “he Selects wool… and works with caring hands”.

– Makes the purchase v. 14 “bringing his food from afar”.

Edna was a “thrifty” (excellent at coupons and garage sales). If someone mentioned a particular item they needed (camping, etc), she would find it at a garage sale and give it to them. she always had a knack for finding quality items.

– She cooks v. 15 “Provides food for her family…”

– She cultivates a garden v. 16 “She plants a vineyard…”

Jenny — “Edna was a great yard worker, a slaver who did things right.”

Jason talked about wanting to help with the yard work, but he’d pull out the wrong flowers—she held back her frustration and had to help him pull out the right ones.

Our text also says that mothers v. 15 “get up while it is still dark” to prepare food. and the v 18 “her lamp does not go out at night.”

v. 27 “She watches over the affairs of her house and does not eat bread idly.” She is not lazy.

Bobby and Donna talked about her providing what the children needed, including making and repairing their clothes.

She oversaw the family, even in protecting the children from snakes. Many people would run away from snakes; she ran towards them to protect the family.

II. A mother’s instruction

v. 26 “He speaks with wisdom and in his tongue there is faithful instruction.”

Scripture — With diligence you shall teach them to your children; Deuteronomy 6; Ephesians 6

Life –

Edna’s organizational skills —

* Packing: Master of packing the trunk and interior of the car for camping trips, etc. There was no room left to pack anything when it was over.

* Packed coins or other things that Jason (or others) might have left at your house; he would come back and find his items in bags with his name inside waiting for them

* His skills were passed on to the children: images organized and labeled by date, easy to put together the slide program for this morning

Discipline

* More disciplinary than Roy

* Annoying bell to use to wake up the kids (Donna managed to hide it)

*Used the thin wooden balloon sticks as a switch to hit and discipline (Roy hit heads)

Registry mantenance

* Started a book on miles and gas mileage for the car because the gas gauge had broken and they needed to know when to fill up the tank; the practice continued

* Diary of people who visited your house; how much time did they stay; etc. — color coded so they could easily search for visitors

* Recorded your bingo games

Experience

* Job Picks

Edna raised us as Roman Catholics. An unusual thing that happened to her is that when they brought incense into her toilets, the smell of it would make her faint.

At one point he wanted to work making parachutes. Applicants were told that if they were prone to fainting, they should not take the job. She accepted the job and the smell of it made her pass out. She lost the job the same day she got it.

III. Mother’s Love

31.11-12 “Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not evil, every day of her life.”

Roy often had to force Edna to buy a dress or things for her; she was always more concerned with the welfare of others than her own.

“It’s my wish” not from your bible

p>

An epitaph on his wife’s tombstone, written by her husband after 60 years of marriage, read: “SHE ALWAYS MADE HIS HOUSE HAPPY.”

Roy and Edna had been married for 68 years!

Edna made Roy and the family happy with the life she led; the words she spoke; and the selfless provisions she made
