A. NAMES 1. jairesis (airesi”, 139), sect, heresy. It is translated thus in 1Co 11:9: See SECT. 2. diamerismos (diamerismov”, 1267), primarily, split, distribution; denotes discussion, dissension, division or discord, breaking as of family ties (dia, separated; mere, part). It is found in Luk 12:51, where it is contrasted with eirene, peace. Cf. diamerizo, SPLIT, etc.¶ 3. stasis (stavsi”, 4714), see , A, No. 4. Translated “dissension” in Act 23:7,10. 4. dicostasia (dicostasiva, 1370), lit.: to be apart (dike, apart; stasis, to be; the root di– indicates division, and is found in many words in various languages). It is used in Rom 16:17, where believers are instructed to single out those who stir up divisions, and to turn away from them; and in Gl 5.20: “dissensions”, where divisions are spoken of as one of the works of the flesh. Some mss. they have this name in 1Co 3:3: See .¶ 5. squisma (scivsma, 4978), cast., schism, denotes breakage, crack (Mat 9:16 and Mc 2.21: “breakage”); “dissension” (Joh 7:43; 9.16; 10.19); “divisions” (1Co 1:10; 11.18); “disagreement” (12.25). See DISAVENENCE, BREAK.¶ The root is skid–, seen in the corresponding verb squizo, TO CUT, etc. Cf. with jairesis, No. 1, etc. B. Verb dicazo (dicavzw, 1369), to cut apart, to divide into two parts. It is used metaphorically in Mat 10:35 “to put into dissension.” See PUT.¶
