Discover the hierarchies and choirs of angels

Angels have custody of each person in particular

The existence of angels is dogma, that is, the truth of the Church’s faith. It is a truth contained in Sacred Scripture, proclaimed in the Ecumenical Councils, affirmed by the unanimous consent of the Holy Fathers, and taught by all theologians faithful to the magisterium of the Church.

The dogmatic definition was given at the IV Lateran Council held in the year 1215. Before this Council, the existence of the Angels had been affirmed and formulated at the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea I (year 325), under the pontificate of Pope Saint Sylvester, whose Decree D.54 clearly explains: “I believe in one God, the Almighty Father, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and of all things visible and invisible.”

Angel choirs

Some Holy Popes of the Church distinguished three groups divided into three hierarchies and each hierarchy into three choirs: the Seraphim, the Cherubim and the Thrones; The Dominations, the Virtues and the Powers; The Principalities, the Archangels and the Angels.

The three choirs of the first hierarchy glorify God, as Holy Scripture says:

“I saw the Lord sitting on a high and lofty throne (…) the Seraphim were on the throne, they cried out to one another and said: ‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of hosts’ (Is. 6, 1-3) . “The Lord reigns (…) he is seated on cherubim” (Ps. 98, 1).

The three choirs lower than those mentioned above are related to the general conduct of the universe. And the last three choruses concern the particular conduct of countries, institutions and people.

The 9 Angelic Choirs grouped into three hierarchies

Seraphim – from the Greek “séraph”, to scorch, burn, consume. They attend before the throne of God and it is their privilege to be united with God in a more intimate way, in the ardor of charity.

Cherubim – from the Hebrew “cherub”, which Saint Jerome and Saint Augustine interpret as “fullness of wisdom and science”. They also attend before the throne of God and it is their privilege to see the truth in a way that is superior to all the other Angels that are below them.

Thrones – sometimes called “Sedes Dei”, (Be of God). They also assist before the throne of God and it is their mission to assist the lower Angels in the necessary proportion.

Dominations – they are so called because they dominate over all the angelic orders in charge of executing God’s will. They distribute their functions and ministries to the lower Angels.

Powers – or “conductors of the sacred order”, carry out great actions that affect the universal government of the world and the Church, performing extraordinary prodigies and miracles.

Virtues – whose name means “strength”, are responsible for eliminating the obstacles that oppose the fulfillment of God’s orders, removing the evil angels that harass the nations to divert them from their purpose and, thus, maintaining creatures and order of Divine Providence.

Principalities – as their name indicates, they are vested with a special authority: they preside over kingdoms, provinces and dioceses; They are so named because their action is more extensive and universal.

Archangels – They are sent by God on missions of greater importance to men.

Angels – Those who have the guardianship of each person in particular, to divert them from evil and direct them to good, defend them against their visible and invisible enemies, and lead them to the path of salvation. They watch over their spiritual and bodily life and at every moment, they send the lights, strength and graces they need.
