Commentary on Revelation 21:8 – Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Bible – Biblical Commentary

But, for the cowardly and unbelieving, for the abominable and murderers, for fornicators and sorcerers, for idolaters and all liars, their inheritance will be the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

21:8 — But cowards and unbelievers, the abominable and murderers, fornicators and sorcerers, idolaters and all liars will have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death — The contrast between verse 7 and 8 is awesome! The promises of God are only for his sons who overcome him; all others, identified as children of the devil, will suffer his fate (20:10). From the second death there is no relief. The redeemed of God will never be bothered by these. The coward backs off (Hebrews 10:38). Unbelievers will die in their sins, because they refuse to believe in him who can forgive them (Joh 12:48). The abominable are partakers of unclean things (Rev 17:4). The murderers now have to die (Gen 9:6, because they did not respect their neighbor made in the image of God). Fornicators are not simply “alternative lifestyle” people; “against his own body he sins” (1Co 6:18). Sorcerers make use of illegal drugs to control the minds of their subjects (see 9:21; 18:23; 22:15). Idolaters can worship even money (Eph 5:5). Liars do not love the truth; They are children of the one who is the father of lies (Joh 8:44). The example of God’s treatment of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11) clearly shows God’s hatred for lies. contrast Rev 14:5.

The characteristics of those who are not in Christ through faith are described, that is, of the unbelievers. They are destined for Lake of firethe death eternal, after the final judgment of God (Rev 20:12-14). All the names that are not written in the book of life (Rev 20:15) are judged according to their works (Rev 20:12), and are shown to deserve eternal death (Romans 6:23). In 1Co 6:9-11Paul makes essentially the same argument.

IN FOCUS

“Alpha and Omega”

(gr. to A kai to O) (Rev 1:8; Rev 21:6; Rev 22:13) # in Strong G1; G2532; G5598: Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. In each context in which this phrase is often used, it is difficult to say whether the title applies to the Father, to Christ, or to both. Surely it can be attributed to both. God in Christ encompasses everything, everything between the Alpha and the Omega, as well as being the First and the Last. This expresses the fullness, understanding and globality of God. He is the Origin of all things and will bring them to their determined end.

THE COWARDS AND UNBELIEVERS. God mentions several classes of people who “shall have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone”:

(1) “Cowards” are those who fear other people’s disapproval and threats more than they value faithfulness to Christ and the truth of His Word. Their safety and social status among others are more important to them than fidelity. Among “the cowards” are the compromisers of the people of God who give up the fight and do not win (cf. Tue 8:35; 1Thess 2:4note; 2Ti 2:12-13grades).

(2) “Unbelievers” include former believers in Christ who were overcome by various sins, such as those listed here. To profess Christ and then live in wickedness is an abomination to God.

(3) Today many churches proclaim that it is possible for someone to be a true child of God and at the same time be immoral, a liar, an adulterer, a homosexual or a murderer. Those who believe this contradict these clear words of God (cf. 1Co 6:9-10; Gal 5:10-21; Eph 5:5-7).

A serious and solemn warning about the types of people who will be excluded from the new heaven and the new earth in the lake of fire. The NT often goes beyond simply mentioning unbelief as what distinguishes the character and lifestyle of the excluded, so that believers can identify that class of people (1Co 6:9-10; Gal 5:19; zip Joh 8:31). sorcerers. The contrast between verse 7 and 8 is terrible! The promises of God are only for his sons who overcome him; all others, identified as children of the devil, will suffer his fate (20:10). From the second death there is no relief. The redeemed of God will never be bothered by these.
The coward turns back (Heb 10:38). Unbelievers will die in his sins, because they refuse to believe in him who can forgive them (John 12:48). 8 (1) That is, people full of falsehood.

8 (two) In the first heaven and the first earth the sea contained the result of God’s judgment, while in the new heaven and the new earth the lake of fire will replace the sea. All negative and unclean things, after being judged by God, will be thrown into the lake of fire where they will suffer the second death and will be tormented, being burned in fire and brimstone for eternity (14:10-11). According to 22:15, the lake of fire will be outside the New Jerusalem and will be Gehenna, (which means lake of fire, Mat_5:22 and note 8), just like Topheth, a place where unclean things were thrown (Jer_19 :11-13), was outside of ancient Jerusalem ( 2Ki_23:10 ; Isa_30:33). The lake of fire is much smaller than the sea.
