Commentary on John 12:46 – Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Bible – Biblical Commentary

I have come into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me will not remain in darkness.

12:46 I, the light, have come into the world, so that everyone who believes in me will not remain in darkness. — (8:12). When Christ came the world was full of darkness, not only in the Gentile world, but also in Judaism. Christ is the only light, because he is the only true revelation of God. Those who do not follow Christ remain in darkness. Light is available, but many prefer darkness. In his first letter (1:5) John says, “God is light”; Christ says, “I, the light.” Therefore, Christ is God. “And there is no darkness in him.” When Christ came, He found his people separated from this light because of his sins (Isaiah 59:1-2). He is the light — the only light — that can end all darkness (1:4; 3:17-19; 8:12).

I don’t judge him can be paraphrased “I do not execute judgment”. Christ will judge, but at his first coming he would not come to judge but to save (Joh 3:17).

I, the Light, have come into the world“I have come into the world as light.” In Joh 8:12 Jesus is presented as the light of the world, but here the light is a simile: Jesus is “like the light”. Another way to express this idea is: “I am the one who makes the light shine among the people in the world”, “I am the light that has come to illuminate this world” (TLA).

So that everyone who believes in me will not remain in darkness, where it must be taken into account that in some cultures one cannot speak of darkness without reference to a place, condition or state: “do not stay in a place in complete darkness”. It is to be noted that while in Joh 12:35 the verb is “to walk”, here it is “to stay”.
