What It Means to Have God’s Anointing – Bible Study

The anointing of the Lord in the AT (Old testament)

The Lord commanded Moses, in Exodus 30 v 22-33, to take “the best aromatic spices, (…)” and to make “with them” a holy anointing oil, a composition of perfumes according to art of the perfumer”.

The one who was anointed with this oil was ” קדשׂ ” ” qadash ” , that is, sanctified, consecrated, holy. He was marked, identified as in contact with the holiness of God, called to live in the intimacy of the environment of the glory of the Lord.

This anointing oil was not in common use, the Lord specified to Moses:

You will not do similar, in the same proportions; she is holy, and you will consider her holy. Anyone who composes such a thing or puts it on a stranger will be excluded from his town. Exodus 30 v 32 – 33

The use of oil as God’s anointing

The use of oil in the Old Testament was common to mark important objects, people, or places:

  • Also, Jacob, when he had the night vision of the ladder, when he woke up, poured oil on the stone that had served as a pillow to consecrate it and called this place “BethEl” which means the house of God. (Gen 28 : 18)

  • The first king, Saul, was anointed (1 Sam 10 v 1), then David, (1 Sam 16 v 13), then the others.

The anointing of God is symbolized by the oil of holiness

This anointing oil is synonymous with holiness. Holiness is synonymous with the presence of God. When God is present, his Spirit is there. The Spirit of God clothed the one who had been chosen to share the good news:

  • “The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to those in need” (Isaiah 61 v 1)

This anointing was upon Jesus, called Christ, “Ξριστος“Christos”, the Anointed One. This anointing he had received gave him all power on earth and in heaven (Matthew 28 v 18). This anointing was the manifestation of a power that lived in him, was clothed in him, flooding his entire being, with a purpose (Isaiah 61)

Jesus had not received this anointing on this earth to be worshiped, recognized, reigned, enriched, or called attention to himself. No, none of that, quite the contrary, but healing hearts, proclaiming liberation and freedom, publishing God’s decrees, consoling, granting and giving. The anointing in question here, which he placed on Jesus, is a power that led him to come not to be served but to serve, to the point of giving his life.

The religious instinct of God’s anointing

Our carnal nature pushes us to the religious instinct. The religious instinct is the worst trap of a Christian, because he believes that he is right, but in fact he is in the appearance of the truth, having distorted the word of God for his own benefit. We see a very clear example of this in the Gospel of Luke in chapter 9.

As Jesus prepares to go to Samaria to spend some time there, he asks that we prepare accommodation for him. But the Samaritans refused. It was then that the disciples James and John, seeing this, said:

  • Lord, do you want us to send fire down from heaven and consume them?

James and John wanted to use the power of God to assert their righteous power over the Samaritans. They had not understood anything.

  • Jesus answered them: “Jesus turned to them and rebuked them, saying: You do not know what spirit you are. For the Son of Man did not come to lose the souls of men, but to save them.”

James and John were inspired by the opposite of what encouraged Jesus. It is the same source of inspiration that prompted the apostle Peter to oppose Jesus when he announced that he was going to die on the cross. Just as Jesus rebuked James and John by telling them that they did not know what spirit animated them, Jesus rebuked Peter by saying:

  • “Get behind me, Satan!” you are scandalous with me; because your thoughts are not the thoughts of God, but those of men (Matthew 16 v 23)

Demonstrative passages of the anointing of God in the new testament

These two passages are the perfect demonstration of the antithesis of God’s anointing. This is what allowed Jesus, by evidence, to reveal to the apostles what conditioned the manifestation of the anointing:

  • In Luke 9, Jesus explains that Christ, who is the Anointed, did not come to lose, but to save. God manifests his anointing for the salvation of souls because his plan is a redemptive plan.

The anointing of God does not manifest itself in a surge of conviction or emotional manifestation, but rather it manifests itself in the lives of those who have given up on themselves, their ambitions, their ministry, their plans, their expectations, to desire only Him and Him alone.

Sign of the anointing of God

The sign of God’s anointing is an inward overflow of his presence.

  • Psalm 23 v5 tells us: “(…) You anoint my head with oil, and my cup overflows.”

Those who are clothed with this anointing have their cup overflowing. This overflow has the effect of fertilizing our life in Him. Psalm 133which prophetically announces the constitution of the Church, the body of Christ, opens up the spiritual reality of what happens when life overflows from one’s own body:

  • “It is like the precious oil that, poured on the head, descends on the beard, on Aaron’s beard, that descends on the hem of his clothes. It is like the dew of Hermon, which descends on the mountains of Zion; Because there the Lord sends blessing, Life, for all eternity.”

This oil that flows over the life of the redeemed is intimately linked to the renunciation of our psychic life, of our “I”, of our willingness to want what He wants.

God’s anointing sprinkles us

As long as we are in the claim, in our own justice, in the argument, in the defense of our interests, we are deprived of its anointing. We must hate our carnal life (John 12 v 25) if we want to access eternal life.

It is at this precise moment that the anointing flows over our lives and that the inner overflow floods our being like the dew that descends from the mountainside. When the dew is there, there’s no use pointing it out, everyone notices it.

Likewise, when the anointing takes a person’s life, it gives off an unmistakable fragrance. No one needs to mention it, everyone can inhale its inimitable scent. Fertilized with his presence, we become bearers of the fruits inherent in his nature:

  • “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, meekness, temperance (…)” (Galatians 5 vs. 22).

It is the consequence of the anointing in the lives of those who carry it. This anointing is the covering of Christ in us. In order to clothe ourselves with it, we must experience interior stripping (2 Co 5 v 4) of this nature that prevents us from putting on the

new man, of the inner Man (Eph 3 v 16-18), which is of the nature of God. Resignation is not an easy thing, it hurts, it is incisive, it is the interior circumcision of which Paul speaks. It is the divine surgical operation that God performs in our life through the circumstances that make us suffer so that we can access the possibility of losing our life and thus gaining his.
