What are the 10 commandments and where are they in the Bible?

God’s law contains 10 commandments that we find in Exodus 20:2-17. The 10 commandments are:

  1. Have no other gods besides me.
  2. Do not make for yourself an idol, or anything that bears resemblance to what is in heaven above, or to what is on earth below, or to what is in the waters under the earth. Do not bow down to them or worship them. I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. When parents are evil and hate me, I punish their children to the third and fourth generation. On the contrary, when you love me and keep my commandments, I show you my love for a thousand generations.
  3. Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. I, the Lord, will not hold innocent anyone who dares to use my false name.
  4. Remember the Sabbath, to consecrate it. Work six days, and do everything you have to do on them, but the seventh day will be a day of rest to honor the Lord your God. Do not do any work on that day, neither your son, nor your daughter, nor your slave, nor your slave, nor your animals, nor foreigners who live in your cities. Remember that in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything in them, and that he rested on the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed and consecrated the Sabbath day.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, so that you may enjoy a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
  6. Do not kill.
  7. Do not commit adultery.
  8. Do not steal.
  9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. Do not covet your neighbor’s house: Do not covet his wife, or his male or female slave, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to him.

The 10 commandments in other versions of the Bible

  1. Will not have other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I am the LORD your God, a jealous God who punishes the wickedness of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me. But I show mercy for a thousand generations to those who love me and keep my commandments.
  3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day shall be the Sabbath to the LORD your God. You shall not do any work on it, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male or female slave, nor your animal, nor the stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them, and he rested on the seventh day. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be prolonged in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
  6. You will not commit murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You will not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male slave, or his female slave, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.

— Exodus 20:2-17, Reina Valera Updated Version (RVA-2015)

  1. Will not have other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above, or on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth. You shall neither worship nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, who punishes the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, and I show mercy to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath for the Lord your God. You shall not do any work on it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor the foreigner who is with you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be prolonged in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
  6. You will not kill.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You will not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant, or her maidservant, or his ox, or her donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.
