- Paul’s first teacher in the faith, Ananias, assured the future apostle that he would regain his sight and be filled with the Spirit.
- Paul’s colleague Barnabas was described as “filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith.”
It’s not always clear exactly what ‘pour out’ means, but God gave it to Christ-followers so they could carry out an especially effective witness to Christ. The work of the Holy Spirit does not come from magic or energy, but from the powerful presence of God. The Spirit is spoken of in terms of quantity and effect, as absent or complete. With the Spirit comes gifts (such as wisdom, joy, sight, and faith).

In this context, the Spirit breaks down the old and builds the new. Outside of that context, what is happening is not the Spirit but a mere change: good, bad, indifferent or complex.
How is the Holy Spirit
The spirit it’s like a medical team for those who have especially deep wounds, for example, those who have been raped, those who suffer from what despotic governments do, those who have to constantly face the racism of their society, those who are enslaved by alcohol, drugs or fear.
In Jesus’ own ministry, inner healing was firmly connected with physical healing, both being a work of the Holy Spirit. God cares about you as a whole, not just about your inner self. We are all fractured beings that the Spirit is working to finish.
The Spirit gives the gifts of wisdom, understanding and insight, even what cannot be otherwise known. The Bible has even poetically described God as Wisdom, to highlight this gift. Yet it is exactly that: a poetic description, enormously powerful, faithful and truthful within its context.
Outside of that narrow context, the use of the Greek word for wisdom or its translations as a divine name becomes a very flat picture of God. Wisdom, as a gift, drives the process of discernment, by which we know what is and what is not of God.
The Spirit revealsFirst of all, through the Scriptures. Without the work of the Spirit, the Bible is nothing more than paper and dead ink. Without the wisdom and insight of the Spirit, science is a mere delusion, psychology is just an obsession with oneself, language becomes just a tool of manipulation, and religion becomes the reality of the masses.
The work of freedom of the spirit
Where the Spirit is, there is freedom. We are all destined, designed, created to be free. But we forge chains for ourselves and others, corrupting our freedom until it is no longer freedom. Only someone not bound by the mess can set us free. That is where Christ comes in.
