TITLE: The Hidden Treasure

TEXT: Matthew 13:44

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man discovered it, he hid it again, and overjoyed he went and sold all that he had and bought that field.”

INTRODUCTION:

This chapter 13 of Matthew is full of great lessons with the Parables of the KINGDOM OF HEAVENS that our LORD JESUS CHRIST has left us. They are lessons that teach us what the Christian Life should be. We will cover the following points:

  1. background

  2. a precious encounter

  3. The Grace of GOD

  4. Gladly

  5. Who finds JESUS CHRIST

LESSON:

  1. background. This Parable of the HIDDEN TREASURE is similar in its message to that of the Parable which follows of the PEARL OF MUCH VALUE.

    1. But we must clarify and refute what some enemies of the Gospel say about this Parable about the alleged lack of ethics of the man who finds the TREASURE.

      1. In the first place, in those days there were no banks like in our times where money or valuables could be kept; the only thing to do was bury them. Archaeologists have on many occasions found gold jars filled with gold coins, jewelery and pearls that had been buried.i

      1. Second, Rabbinical law said that whenever a man found fruit or money, it belonged to the person who found it.ii That is, if a person found money or other things of value, which were obviously lost or whose owner was dead or unknown, it belonged to the person who had found it.iii

    1. This Parable is found only in our Gospel. Matthew uses the term “The Kingdom of Heaven”, while the other Gospels say: “The Kingdom of God”. Both terms are synonyms.

  1. A valuable meeting. (Matthew 13:44) “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man discovered it, he hid it again, and overjoyed he went and sold all that he had and bought that field.”

    1. The man finds by chance a VERY VALUABLE TREASURE, but he buries it again until he sells everything he had to buy the field where it was buried.

      1. Note that the HIDDEN TREASURE is JESUS CHRIST and whoever finds that TREASURE finds ETERNAL LIFE.

    1. Thus we can compare FAITH as a HIDDEN TREASURE that we have to dust off to receive JESUS CHRIST.

      1. (Galatians 3:22) “But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that through faith in Jesus Christ what was promised might be granted to those who believe.”

    1. The Gospel is a HIDDEN TREASURE revealed through PREACHING or personal WITNESS.

      1. (1 Peter 1:12) “It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but were serving you. They spoke of the things that have now been announced to them by those who preached the gospel to them through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even the angels themselves long to behold such things.”

  1. The Grace of GOD. (John 6:44) “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

    1. In this Parable we have been able to see that the man found a TREASURE that he was not looking for, although apparently he was looking for “something”.

      1. But as our Text that we have read says, it is GOD who calls the sinner, just as he called that man when he found the HIDDEN TREASURE.

    1. We should note that although GOD calls the sinner, the sinner has to BELIEVE in order to be saved. This is the FAITH that we have already mentioned.

      1. The man sold everything to buy the field with the Treasure, showing that the meaning is that the man believed and gave everything to FOLLOW the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

  1. Gladly. (Matthew 13:44) “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man discovered it, he hid it again, and overjoyed he went and sold all that he had and bought that field.”

    1. The joy of meeting the LORD JESUS leads the man to SELL EVERYTHING to buy the field. In other words, man leaves EVERYTHING to receive the Savior.

      1. The Gospel produces JOY; but it is not a JOY or JOY for the circumstances of life, since that kind of JOY or JOY is TEMPORARY.

      1. This JOY or HAPPINESS is spiritual, that is, it is given by GOD. Hence 1 Thessalonians 5:16 says:

        1. “Always be joyful.” Other Versions say: “Joyful” or “Happy.”

    1. With joy also comes DENIAL. That is to give your life to the Savior.

      1. (Matthew 16:24) “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to be my disciple, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

  1. Who finds JESUS CHRIST. The Gospel discovered for us should not be neglected because it is a great TREASURE.

    1. Sadly, there are many who hear the Gospel, but do not appreciate its value, since they do not respond to the call of GOD.

    1. The example that we see in this Parable is: whoever finds JESUS CHRIST must be ready to DELIVER EVERYTHING to receive him in his life as SAVIOR, since the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST is a very valuable TREASURE that is not temporary, but ETERNAL.
