TEREBINTH – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Terebinth (Heb. zêlâh). Term that does not appear in our RVR (“oak”) but does appear in the LPD Isa 6:13; Hos 4:13). It is a large tree, quite tall, but it is not known for sure to which species the Bible refers. In ancient times the terebinth was revered for its majestic lines and proportions. See Oak. Plant that is classified as Pistacia terebinthus. tree from which a product known in commerce as Chios turpentine is extracted; it is greenish-yellow in color, has a pleasant odor and mild flavor; Due to its properties, it is reminiscent of turpentine or turpentine that is extracted from conifers.
