SALATIEL – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Salatiel (Heb. and Aram. Shê’altîêl “he I have asked of God”; cun. Salti-ilu; Gr. Salathiel). Son of Jeconiah (Joachim) of Judah (Mic 1:12) and father* of Zerubbabel* (Ezr 3:2, 8; 5:2; Neh 12:1; Hag.1:1,12,14; 2:2 , 2. 3). But Luk 3:27 tells us that Shealtiel was the son of Neri, of the lineage of David through Nathan. This apparent contradiction is explained by assuming that one of the descendants of Jeconías, perhaps a son, died without having a family, and that when Neri married the widow, Salatiel was born from that union. In that case, Neri would be the biological father (Lc.), and Jeconías the legal ancestor (Mat_ Others have suggested that Shealtiel was a literal son of Neri, but son of Jeconías by adoption; or that a daughter of Jeconías, the case with Neri , and therefore Shealtiel was the son of Neri and the grandson of Jeconiah (but, according to custom, Jewish “son”); or that Shealtiel probably married Neri’s daughter and heiress, and was therefore considered “son” of this one See Genealogy.

(gr. Salathiel, I have asked God).

The son of Jeconiah, king of Judah, and the father of Zerubbabel, according to the genealogy in Mat 1:12. In Luke’s genealogy, he appears as the father of Zerubbabel, but as the son of Neri (Luk 3:27). Matthew’s genealogy is based on legal succession, while Luke’s is based on true succession. If the direct line ceased at Jeconiah because he had no son to succeed him, the right of succession would go to Shealtiel, a descendant of Nathan and the son of Neri who, as Jeconiah’s legal heir, was counted as his son by Matthew. .

vet, = “I have asked God”. One of the sons of King Jeconiah (1 Chron. 3:17; Mt. 1:12). In Lc. 3:27 he is listed as the son of Neri; in Esd. 3:2, etc., he is mentioned as the father of Zerubbabel; it appears that he was Zerubbabel’s uncle, or perhaps his grandfather (1 Chron. 3:17-19). A plausible solution seems to be that, although Shealtiel was not the direct son of Jeconiah, nor the father of Zerubbabel according to the flesh, he was the rightful heir to Jeconiah’s throne. On Shealtiel’s death, the right to the crown passed to Zerubbabel. Shealtiel is then the link between Jeconías and Zerubbabel. (See GENEALOGY OF JESUS.)
