Romans 8:17 Commentary – Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Bible – Biblical Commentary

And if we are children, we are also heirs: heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may be glorified with him.

8:17 — We are children (because we are guided by the Holy Spirit) and therefore also heirs. Compare Ps 2:8. But the inheritance is conditional: if we suffer with Christ, as he suffered (1Pe 2:21).

heirs: All children of God have an inheritance, which is based on their relationship with God, which is incorruptible, undefiled, and reserved in heaven (1Pe 1:4). His inheritance includes a hope of eternal life (Tit 3:4-7). What co-heirs with Christ, they share his sufferings now (Phil 3:11-14) and then share his glory.

(gr. judgment) (Romans 8:15; Gal 4:5; Eph 1:15) # in Strong G5206: The Greek word translated adoption is derived from the word Jewsmeaning “son,” and a derivative of the word tidsemi (G5087), which means “placement”. It is a legal term that in this context indicates that believers have been given all the privileges of a child in the family of God. God puts the Spirit of his Son in our hearts so that we become, in reality, his natural sons. As such, we are not simply “adopted” (in the sense that the word now implies), but genuinely “begotten” by God. God transforms us from children of men to children of God, the opposite of what happened to Christ when the Son of God became the Son of Man.

IF WE SUFFER TOGETHER WITH HIM. Paul reminds believers that the victorious life in the Spirit is not an easy road. Jesus suffered, and his followers will also suffer. That suffering is considered to be “with Him” (cf. 2Co 1:5; Phil 3:10; Col 1:24; 2Ti 2:11-12), and it is the consequence of the relationship of children with God, of the identification with Christ, of the testimony about Him, and of the refusal to adapt to the world (cf. Romans 12:1-2).

heirs. Every believer has been made an heir of God, our Father (Matt 25:34; Gal 3:29; Eph 1:11; Col 1:12; Col 3:24; Hebrews 6:12; Hebrews 9:15; 1Pe 1:4). We will inherit eternal salvation (Tit 3:7), to God himself (Lam 3:24; zip Salt 73:25; Rev 21:3), his glory (Romans 5:2), and all things in the universe (Hebrews 1:2). Unlike the Jewish practice relating to the primacy of the firstborn, under Roman law the inheritance was divided equally among the sons, to ensure more adequate protection of inherited possessions. joint heirs God has appointed his Son as heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2). Each adopted child will receive by divine grace the full inheritance that Christ receives by divine right (cf. Matt 25:21; Joh 17:22; 2Co 8:9). if we suffer together with him. The proof of the ultimate glory of the believer is that he suffers for his Lord, whether it be derision or physical persecution (Matt 5:10-12; Joh 15:18-21; 2Co 4:17; 2Ti 3:12).

heirs of God. The believer as a child of God inherits eternal life and shares with Christ the glory that the Father gave Him (Jn 17:5, 24). In the meantime, he must be willing to suffer for the name of Christ.

17 super (1) This shows that there is a condition to be heirs. We are not heirs simply because we are born of God, but after we are born, we must grow in life to become mature sons, and then we must go through suffering to be glorified and become legitimate heirs.
