History and image of San Onofre
Saint Onofre is believed to have been the son of an Egyptian or Abyssinian king who lived in the 4th century. Legend has it that the devil managed to get his father to deliver him to the flames, as a test to find out if he was the son of an adulterous relationship with the queen, but the child was unharmed and since then it is believed that he has divine gifts.
As a child, he entered an Egyptian Thebaid convent (monks who lived in the desert) but after several years, as an adult, he left and went to live as a hermit. The legend says that an angel gave him bread and wine daily and that he only ate dates and water.
The history of this saint was made known by a disciple of his named Paphnutius who wrote the life and work of Saint Onofre.
His image is represented as a saint with a long beard and wrapped in his own hair. He usually appears situated in the desert.
