Who was Saint Helena
Saint Helena was the mother of the emperor who granted freedom to the Christians, after more than three centuries of persecution. One of the things for which she became famous besides her, was for having managed to find the Holy Cross of Christ in Jerusalem. That is why she is also known as Saint Helena of Jerusalem.
She was born in the year 270, near the Black Sea and was said to be a very beautiful woman. When the Roman army arrived in those lands, the famous general Constantius Chlorus fell in love with her and married her. Together they had a son named Constantine who would become famous over time.
When the general Constantius Chlorus died, his son Constantine was proclaimed emperor after a victory against the enemies in Rome. Constantine decreed that the Catholic religion would have full freedom. The emperor loved her mother so much that he appointed her empress and ordered coins to be made with her figure, in addition to giving her full powers to use the government money in the works that she decided.
Later Elena (who had converted to Christianity) went to Jerusalem with workers and they dedicated themselves to excavating the site where Jesus Christ had been crucified. She found the cross there and that is why in the representations of her she is drawn with a cross in her hand.
His feast is celebrated in the Orthodox Christian Church with that of his son Constantine, on May 21. The Roman Catholic Church commemorates her on August 18.
