Who is Saint Charbel
Saint Charbel was a Lebanese Catholic monk who lived in the 19th century (he was born in 1829 and died in 1898). His original name is Yusef Anton Makluf. At the age of twenty-three he left home and entered the monastery of Our Lady of Mayfuq, there taking the name of a Syrian martyr, Charbel.
He was a man very devoted to Catholicism who lived as a religious of the Maronite Order (of Saint Maron) in the Annaya convent for much of his life.
It is known that Saint Charbel lived a very hermit life, dedicated to prayer, silence but above all to work. He worked in the fields of the convent to earn his bread.
After passing away, Saint Charbel took recognition since his body remained intact, as if it had been mummified for a long period of time and that was considered a miracle. It is for this miracle that he was beatified in 1965 and canonized in 1977, being since that year the first saint of Lebanon.
