vet, Listening (hearing), in the Bible, is almost always more than just listening: when God listens, it means that He has granted something (Josh. 10:14). When a man listens, it means that he draws the consequences of what he has heard (Jer. 26: 3ff.; Lk. 6:47). Listening is the way by which man comes to faith (Rom. 10:14).

Biblical revelation is essentially God’s word to man. This is why, while in the Greek mysteries and in the Eastern gnosis the relationship between man and God is founded above all on vision, according to the Bible “faith is born from hearing” (Rom 10,17).

1. Man must listen to God. a) Listen! the prophet shouts with the authority of God (Am 3,1; Jer 7,2). Listen!, repeats the wise man in the name of his experience and his knowledge of the * law (Prov 1,8). Listen, Israel!, the pious Israelite repeats every day to penetrate the * will of his God (Dt 6,4; Mk 12,29). Listen! repeats Jesus himself, the word of God (Mk 4,3.9 p).

Now then, according to the Hebrew meaning of the word *truth, listening, welcoming the word of God is not only giving it an attentive ear, but opening your *heart (Act 16,14), putting it into practice (Mt 7,24ss), is *obey. Such is the obedience of the *faith that requires heard preaching (Rom 1,5; 10,14ss).

b) But the man does not want to listen (Dt 18,16.19), and therein lies his drama. He is deaf to the calls of God; his ear and his heart are uncircumcised (Jer 6,10; 9,25; Act 7, 51). Such is the sin of the Jews that Jesus encounters: “You cannot listen to my’ word… He who is of God hears the words of God; therefore you do not hear them, because you are not of God” (Jn 8,43.47).

Indeed, only God can open the ear of his *disciple (Is 50,5; cf. ISa 9,15; Job 36,10), “deepen it” so that he obeys (Ps 40, 7s). Thus in messianic times the deaf will hear, and the miracles of Jesus mean that finally the deaf people will understand the word of God and obey him (Is 29, 18; 35,5; 42,18ss; 43,8; Mt 11,5 ). It is what the voice from heaven proclaims to the disciples: “This is my beloved Son, listen to him” (Mt 17,5 p).

*Mary, accustomed to faithfully keeping the words of God in her heart (Lk 2,19.51), was glorified by her son Jesus when he revealed the profound meaning of her motherhood: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it” (Lk 11,28).

2. God listens to man. The man in his * prayer asks God to listen to him, that is, to accept his prayer. God does not listen to the unjust or sinners (Is 1,15; Mic 3,4; Jn 9,31). But he hears the poor, the widow and the orphan, the humble, the captives (Ex 22,22-26; Ps 10,17; 102,21; Sant 5,4). He listens to the just, to those who are pious and do his will (Ps 34,16.18; Jn 9,31; 1Pe 3,12), to those who ask according to his * will (1 In 5,14s). And if he does it, it is because he “always” listens to his Son Jesus (Jn 11,41s), for whom the Christian’s prayer passes forever.
