The Greek term for “gift” is charisma, which is defined as something that the Lord gives freely, it is a spiritual gift. So this is not something that can be earned. However, we can ask for it.

1.- The Gifts of Manifestation
The first group of manifestation gifts can be found in 1 Corinthians 12: “But to each one it is given by the manifestation of the Spirit, that is, the evidence, the spiritual illumination of the Spirit, for profit. For to him is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another, word of knowledge according to the same Spirit to another, faith by the same Spirit; and to another, gifts of healings by the Spirit; to another, to perform miracles; to another prophecy, that is, the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose; to another, the ability to discern and distinguish between the spirits of truth, to another, different languages; and to another, the interpretation of tongues.” (1 Corinthians 12:7-10)
In this sense, there are nine gifts that can be appreciated in the previous verse:
- The word of wisdom, which refers to a revelation that comes from above.
- The word of knowledge, which is a revelation about someone or something that cannot be made known naturally.
- It provides us with Faith, the one that moves mountains and fully trusts in God.
- Give us the gift of healing in the name of the Lord.
- The gift of performing miracles, where the power of God is revealed, breaking natural laws and defying science.

This can be seen in Ephesians 4: 11-13 “And he himself appointed some, apostles; to others, prophets; to others, evangelists; to others, pastors and teachers, in order to perfect the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edification of the body of Christ, until we all arrive at the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”
In this biblical passage we can note the existence of five gifts:
- The apostle, who is the one who establishes and is in charge of strengthening the churches.
- The prophet, who is in charge of proclaiming the message of God.
- The evangelist is called to preach the gospel.

These gifts are not titles that are granted but functions, since a person cannot become a prophet because someone gives him the name of a prophet; but he becomes a prophet when he develops that gift and responds to God’s call and has a willing heart.

3.- The Motivational Gifts
We can see this type of gift in the New Testament, in the book of Romans: “So, having different gifts according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: He who has the gift of prophecy, according to the measure of faith; of service, who dedicates himself to serving, the one who teaches, who dedicates himself to teaching; the one who exhorts should dedicate himself to exhortation; the one who distributes, let him do it with simplicity of heart and liberality; the one who presides, who presides with solicitude, with all his heart; whoever shows mercy, do it with true joy and enthusiasm” (Romans 12:6-8)

In this way, God has given us the gifts so that we can use them for the benefit of our neighbor and thanks to free will we can make the decision to use these motivational gifts correctly or to do it for our vainglory. Which is a mistake in which we can fall, sometimes without realizing it, since we think that it is by our own means that we have them.

- Encouragement is the gift of encouraging others to have a fulfilling life as Christians.
- The gift of giving is someone who enjoys sharing what they have to benefit their neighbor. He is also known as the contributor.
- He who has the gift of administrator, directs and leads.
- The gift of compassion is one who has mercy, and cares for those in need and shows them compassion and love.
Spiritual gifts and context

The gifts that God gives us are the ones that encourage us to move forward in our day to day, blessing our neighbor and serving the Lord as he demands in his word. We will certainly feel blessed by helping others. But one must be very cautious and ask God for direction when using these gifts, since in many cases they are not well channeled and thus we can feel somewhat frustrated.
