JEDIDIAS – Encyclopedic Dictionary of Bible and Theology

Jedidiah (Heb. Yedîdyâh, “beloved of Yahweh”). Name given to Solomon at birth. Whether it was given to him by David or by Nathan is not clear (2Sa 12:25). Some think that Jedidiah was his personal name, and Solomon his royal name.

vet, = “beloved of Jehovah”. Name given to Solomon, at his birth, by Nathan the prophet, as a special token that God looked favorably upon David once he repented after the death of Bathsheba’s first son (2 Sam. 12:24, 25 ).

The name that Nathan, the prophet of God, gave to the second son of David and Bath-sheba. (2Sa 12:24, 25) The name indicated Jehovah’s love and acceptance of the newborn, in contrast to his rejection of the previous child, the product of adulterous relations, who died shortly after birth. (2Sa 12:13-19) However, Jedidiah never became as well known a name as Solomon. (See SOLOMI“N.)
