Jasper (Heb. yâsheÆ’êh; ac. yashpû and ashpû; gr. íaspis.) Gem well known by the ancients, but obviously not the one we know today by that name. Suggested identifications include varieties of chalcedony, agate, opal, jade, and nephrite. It was the last gem in the 606 breastplate of the high priest (Exo 28:20; 39:13) and was among the ornaments of the king of Tire (Eze 28:13). The King of the universe, as seen in vision, appeared to John as “like a jasper stone” (Rev 4:3), and he chose the same word to describe the glory of the holy city (21:11), its wall and the 1st foundation (vs 18, 19).

vet, (Heb. “yashepheh”; Gr. “iaspis”). It is not identified with modern jasper, which is an opaque variety of quartz in many different colors. It is unknown which stone the Scripture refers to. One of the covering stones of the symbolic king of Tire in Eden (Ez. 28:13). He who sat on the throne in heaven “was like a jasper stone…” (Rev. 4:3). Modern jasper is an opaque variety of quartz colored by the presence of iron oxide as well as other metallic oxides. The variety of colors that it presents are: white, red, yellow, brown or black, and they are often arranged in layers. Jasper is harder than glass and is found in metamorphic rocks, either in irregular formations or in defined crystals. The most prized varieties are used as gemstones and are amenable to polishing. However, some scholars believe that since jasper (Gr. í·a·spis) is called a “most precious stone that is crystal clear” at Revelation 21:11, the ancient stone may have been of greater rarity and value. superior to modern jasper, which is relatively inexpensive, and perhaps instead of being opaque it was bright and translucent. Some scholars are of the opinion that the Greek term actually refers to the diamond.
Placed last in the second row of stones in Aaron’s “judgment breastplate” was a jasper stone (Heb. ya·halom), representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel. (Ex 28:2, 15, 18, 21; 39:11) Among the precious stones that adorned the “covering” worn by the king of Tire was jasper. (Eze 28:12, 13) In the vision of Jehovah’s heavenly throne of splendor, John observed that “he that is seated is, in appearance, like a jasper stone and a red-colored precious stone.” (Re 4:1-3, 10, 11) “The holy city, New Jerusalem” is also described as having a radiance “like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone shining with crystal clarity.” The wall of the holy city was built of jasper, and of jasper was also the first foundation stone.
