Is everything we have or receive because we deserve it?

What the verses above show us is that God provides some things for all people, such as sun and rain. Some things are the result of our choices or those of the people around us.

The objective answer to the question is no. The Scriptures tell us a few things about this subject:

♦ Divine providence is for the good and the bad: “For he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).

♦Everything we sow we will reap: “Do not make mistakes: God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7).

♦ Salvation is free, through faith in Christ. This means there is nothing we can do to earn divine favor. Works are not meritorious, but fruits of grace, of faith. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this does not come from you, it is a gift from God. It does not come from works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8, 9).

What the verses above show us is that God provides some things for all people, such as sun and rain. Some things are the result of our choices or those of the people around us. We have a selfish heart, a heart that deceives us. We often think we are doing good, but in reality we are being selfish. All of this has its consequences. Much suffering in the world that could be avoided is caused by humanity itself. Examples of this are carelessness for the planet and abuse in relationships. Things that are not God’s will. God allows these things to happen because they are the fruit of our freedom. It is the law of sowing and reaping.

Fortunately for every human being, salvation is possible. The greatest gift, eternal life, is not deserved by anyone, but everyone can receive it. You just need to accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. You just need to believe in God’s love and trust completely in the merits of Jesus. Have you accepted this undeserved gift? How about learning more about God’s love for you? Study the Bible and allow God to speak to your heart!
