In Scripture the ideas of foolishness and wisdom are opposed. The n., which is the one who says “in his heart: There is no God” (Ps 14:1; Ps 53:1), and the sage are the subject of various comments that mark the differences between the two, especially in the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. †œThe prosperity of the nos. will destroy them†, but he who listens to wisdom “will abide safely” (Pro 1:32-33). †œThe nos. they will bear disgrace†, but “the wise shall inherit honor” (Pro 3:35). †œThe son n. it is sadness of his mother †, while † œa wise son makes his father glad † (Pro 10: 1). †œThe no. from lips it will fall†, but “the wise in heart will receive the commandments” (Pro 10:8), and so on. †œThe no. walks in darkness †, while † œthe wise man has his eyes on his head † (Eccl 2:14). † œThe heart of the sage is at his right hand but the heart of n. at his left hand † (Eccl 10:2), etc.
The Lord Jesus called n. to those who practiced hypocrisy, like the Pharisees (Mat 23:19) and also to the rich man in the parable, who did not have God in the news of him while he accumulated riches (Luke 12:20). Paul teaches that idolatry is a sign of man’s folly (Rom 1:21-22).

vet, Person devoid of intelligence or wisdom (1 Sam. 21:13; Pr. 7:22; 2 Cor. 11:16). The term foolish particularly designates the sinner, implying the lack of knowledge of God that is revealed above all in the wicked (Jb. 5:2; Pr. 14:9). The more talent you have received, the more responsibility you have; he who uses his gifts for evil purposes is a fool (1 Sam. 26:21; 2 Sam. 3:33; Ps. 14: 1; cf. Ps. 14: 2, 3, etc.; Pr. 26 :10; Matt 5:22). He who turns away from God to follow idols and his wickedness is a fool (Jer. 4:22; 50:38; Rom. 1:22). To the people of the world, it is the believers who are fools (Hos. 9:7; Acts 26:24; 1 Cor. 4:10). This is not surprising, since Christ himself was treated in this way (Jn. 10:20; Mark 3:21). Therefore, “if anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become ignorant, that he may become wise” (1 Cor. 3:18). (See PHILOSOPHY, GREECE, WISDOM, A.)
